Bush as a born-again Christian in 1986 and Kitty Kelley book
If Bush claims he put substance-abuse behind him in 1986 by becoming a born-again Christian in 1986, and Kitty Kelley says George W. Bush snorted coke when his father was president (1989-1993), is that a lie religious people will care about?

6. that's a good one... that the word, or you make it up?
we know that bush uses fundie codewords in his speeches. But if there is a well known fundie slang word for that type of person who lies about being born again, we should use it all the time

9. We used to call people who made false claims in church...
testiliars instead of testifiers. And said they had a testiphony instead of a testimony.

7. fundies have zero interest in the truth
George W Bush could go live on prime-time national TV and slaughter, eviscerate and devour a human baby and the zealots and fundies would find some way to rationalize it.

8. Only he knows what is in his heart, but

his behavior is not very Christian.

Consider how he loves to mock people - particularly people who are less fortunate than himself. Carla Fay Tucker for one.

On edit - in fact, Tucker is an excellent example of why Bush's coke snorting days still matter despite his claimed "born againess". Tucker was convicted of murder, sentenced to death. She became a born again Christian in prison and pleaded for her sentence to be commuted to life in prison. She had an enormous amount of evidence showing her good works.

Bush dismissed her Christianity, her good works. He did not forgive her for what she had done. He didn't even take her seriously. He mocked her openly. He sneered: "please don't kill me" and denied her request.

Her life change did not matter to him at all. Why should his alleged life change matter to me?

10. No silly, if he confesses after each line (murder) he's saved.
I think fanatics (and serial killers) operate this way.

12. Maybe for some people it is sincere, but not for everyone
Gee -- I was raised Catholic, and we were brought up to get it right the first time. I guess the sentiment that being "born again" as a requisite for being truly religious just doesn't cut it with me. Hey -- if you want to be born again, if that works for youn, fine -- just get out of my face, because freedom of religion is a two-way street.

Certainly, powerful conversion experiences have been around for thousands of years, and some people are utterly transformed by them.

On the other hand, these experiences seem to have been codified, and are requisite for membership in certain churches, and when it becomes mandatory like this, I think it is safe to assume a varying level of committment to one's vows. Again, hey, whatever.

But I guess what bugs me are the people who preach about how evil other Americans are, and judge YOU harshly, and send YOU to jail for making the "wrong choices", or righteously bomb people -- when THEY get caught doing some pretty seedy stuff -- like that Chenowyth harpy who had railed against Bill Clinton's immorality, who was discovered to have had an adulterous relationship while serving in the House -- all she did was say, "I've discussed it with the Lord and He's forgiven me."

Aw, isn't that special? How convenient. Obviously, to them, "Jesus" is just another stick to beat YOU with, and apparently His primary duty is cloaking THEIR sins....

We can anticipate that Mr Rove will attempt to paint Kitty Kelley as some raving loony -- which is very untrue. IF they can get anything to stick, all george and The Virgin Mother Laura have to say is that "Jesus saved me from all that."

How nice that George and Laura got away from never facing the consequences of their drug use, and drunk driving (unless you count running your boyfriend over) -- and didn't end up in jail for long sentences because people like them have passed legistation to harshly punish "drug terrorists."

I think its marvelous that people can make changes in their life -- but what really pisses me off big time is when AFTER they escape legal and personal consequences for their behavior, they go on to harshly judge and punish others, OR expect that they should be regarded as totally pure and unsullied, and that their past is irrelevant. If the hypocritical creep had used his "transformation" to help others, that would be different -- but all it seems to be for him is to keep him from having to face responsibility for shitty stuff he has done, and disown it.
