If the draft comes, the only people ineligible should be blind, and totall
disabled. No student deferments, no family deferments, NONE, NADA!!
All NGs under 40 should be in the pot. If you are among the top 2% you should be among the first to go. "To whom much is given, much is required." There should be a citizens corps to monitor the draft to make sure it is honest.

1. student deferrments have been removed from the propositions
floating in Congress, from what I heard here on DU. For example:

student registers for academic year 2004-2005, and begins to attend school. Gets draft notice in late Sept, must report for duty in December. bye-bye, financial aid given out for the full year....

2. If you draft mothers
what are you going to do with their children? Stuff them in the foot locker until Mom's done playing soldier?

3. Nah, fatigue 'em up and teach 'em to shoot.

By the time they hit 18, thre'll be in Syria or North Korea anyway, might as well conscript 'em early. It'll be like a Head Start program for the New World Order.

4. Send the wealthy first, I agree.
They clearly get the most out of society. It's about time they stop sneaking around finding loopholes and be Americans fighting for their freedom to exploit, cheat, and smother.

6. No one will support pregnant women in combat zones
If women, as well as men, are drafted into war, expect there to be a rise in the pregnancy rate amongst young women.

7. When push comes to shove
the repukes will make sure that deferments are in place and women won't be eligible. No way will a draft in this country ever be equitable. The poor and working class will, as always, be the ones to go.

10. One exception I could support
Edited on Sun Sep-12-04 02:14 PM by Dzimbowicz
would be the genuine Quakers (let's not forget that one of our worst war-mongers, trickie-dickie claimed he was a Quaker) and the Amish. These two groups have always taught and supported non-violence; and, as a matter of fact they do have (and always had) a recognized deferment from military service.
As I understand, some women would have the option of serving in recognized charitable organizations such as the Red Cross, Amicorps and such if the draft were to be reinstated. But, as a veteran myself, I believe there should be no deferments for school or "other more important reasons" (like Cheney). Here is something to ponder, how many rich kids know physicians who would and could produce fallacious documents stating that some rich kid had asthma or some other condition which would allow them a deferment?

FYI: Some things which will allow one to 'flunk' the physical: color blindness to the point of failing red/green distinction (I am about 50% color blind and almost flunked because of this); bladder control problems; asthma; sleepwalking (but only as an adult); and, if all else fails toak up a doobie beforehand and flunk the urinalysis. Oh yeah, since they have a "Don't ask, don't tell" policy concerning homosexuality, so if appropriate or not - tell!

14. Actually You Got It Backwards
One of the hugh problems with reinstitutin a Draft is that we have far more potential draftees than we could possibly have a need for. I believe that the last number I saw said that there were over 12 million young men within the age brackets, not in school, not married, and healthy in the US. There's plenty of potential draftees out there, the problem is how do you exempt such a vast number of them and make it look at all fair?

That is the mission of Selective Service. 100k warm bodies in basic training in 30 days. Of course there would be another 100k, and another, .......
