1. That's been around for at least 30 years -
Of course, it refers to the shorthand in the league standings.
It really doesn't make any sense in spoken language because it adds syllables.

2. Iowa Hawkeye game
It is tradition for the four big flags which spell I O W A are dispatched to the four corners of the stadium. Then, fans in each quarter alternate yelling I, O, W, and finally A. My tickets are unfortunately in the "W" section. Today, a larger than expected group of us in the "W" section yelled Kerry during our W que. So, hopefully some heard
I O Kerry A.
