President Kerry's First Official Act......
...Sign an executive order implementing the Fairness Doctrine for broadcast media!

I want him to have the god damn pen in his hand while he's being sworn in.

We get an hour of progressive time.

It would take most of the nut jobs off the air to free up time.

It would be the law!

10. It sounds tempting
but difficult to enforce. Who would decide whether a show or individual was left or right wing?

16. But who is we?
That's what's got me worried - couldn't the group doing the regulating be influenced by a right wing administration in power as much as a left one? Is it the FCC?

I'm sorry to play 20 questions, it's just something I'm a little in the dark about.

17. That's not how it worked
what it typically allowed for was time (not necessaily equal time) for opposing comments by responsible spokespersons on issues of public concern or personal attacks.

2. I think his first official act should be a televised apology to the world.
For the behavior of the prior occupant of the White House.

23. I think he should try to reunite Americans instead
A public apology to the world would be kind of embarrassing for America. Our moving on in a professional and competent manner, as well as the fact that Bush was voted out and sent home to his ranch, would be message enough.

Kerry will have an opportunity to do some healing by trying to bring the extremes a little closer together. That's a far better legacy than making a show out of Bush's defeat before the world - we still do have some "enemies" out there that would lap that up and use it against any administration trying to negaotiate with them - not to mention the way Republicans could exploit such an announcement at election time.

Job Bush should be forced to apologize.

15. Once again, the fairness doctrine cannot be reinstated
through an executive order. It would require the FCC to go through the administrative rulemaking process prescribed by the APA.

They can certainly do this, however- CLINTON's FCC could have to- but he chose to sell us (and his own party out) even going so far as to appoint Michael Powell.

If the FCC follows the correct procudures, then it would take a veto proof majority of both houses of Congress to overturn it.

22. The media has powerful lawyers
and also a majoity on the dC Circuit, where litigation over the rule(s) would inevitably be fought- so proper procedure- down to dotting every "i" and crossing every "t" would be required. Still, considering the standard of review and the obvious problem- the FCC should have little difficulty reregulating not only the various provisions of the fairness doctrine, but other much needed media reforms as well.

24. Arrest and transport
literally every elected and appointed official -- all thousands of them.

Send them all to Gitmo. And put military intelligence in charge of their debriefings. Then ship them to Iran for a fair trial and ... well, you get the idea.

25. Maybe not the first
but the media has to be a very high issue for him to confront. Pushing legislation to reinstate the Media Act, Fairness Doctrine is a must. The ownership guideline are need to be redrawn.
