Did George W.Bush ask Bill Clinton to throw the election to his father
in 1992 in return for GHWB's support in 1996? I remember reading that some such offer was made by GWB in a telephone call to Clinton.I think Hillary Clinton recalled that conversation with amazement. Anyone else have either a link or any other information on this?

1. I never heard that one.
Why would he ask Clinton to give up, no guarantee that he would then win in '96? Not that he would have considered it.

2. In fact, what I remember clearly was that such a guarantee was made by GW.

3. As I recall, it wasn't to...
... "throw" the election. The Bush campaign asked Clinton to drop out early on, assuring Clinton that 1996 would be wide-open for him to run.

As the story goes, when Clinton refused, that's when the smears out of Arkansas started, and the Arkansas Project went into high gear and stayed there for eight years.

Cheers.

4. My memory of this is vague but I was under the impression that
this offer came up when it looked like the elder Bush was badly trailing Bill Clinton in opinion polls.

5. Yup...that's what went down.
According to Joe Conason's book...."The Hunting of a President." They wanted him to drop out and he told them to take a hike...and the rest is history. The Vast Right Wing Conspiracy was born. :(

6. Thank you for the citation. To the list of evil deeds committed by
this family you can add this one because it shows the utter contempt in which they hold our people, our institutions and our Constitution. It does not surprise me they fixed the 2000 elections in Florida.
