Kerry on Tom Joyner Morning Show today
Am I the only one on DU who heard this? I missed it live, but heard about it on the drive to work, and was excited enough about his interview on the show that I made a point to listen online at home after work.

I put in a plug for the TJMS on a thread about NPR earlier. No one has responded to that post. No big deal. But I admit I am suprised that no one started a thread on Kerry's interview on the show this morning.

Hello? Any other Tom Joyner or Tavis Smiley fans out there? Kerry did a good job. Here is a link to "what you missed" on the TJMS for today. I highly recommend listening to Tavis Smiley's segment before the Kerry segment. Please invest a few minutes in this incredibly worthwhile dialogue:

3. Thanks!
I walk to work and leave at the last possible minute, so I rarely get to hear any morning shows (considering most of the crap that's on, I feel fairly lucky).

6. It made my morning!
I wish more DUers had heard it (or would at least show some interest in what Tom Joyner and those on his show have to say). There has been very little interest shown in any of the threads I've seen mentioning the show all day today (unless I've missed the big one on this topic!)

I may be inviting flames here, but after thinking on it several hours, I think this needs to be said. The African American vote can (and I hope will) be the deciding factor (by a landslide) in this presidential election. If activist Democrats (of any race) like those of us on this board aren't interested in what people like Tom Joyner have to say, we are missing the boat. Not only in building support for Kerry or any other candidate -- but in building a better future for ALL Americans.

5. WOW! THANKS! That was De-
LightFul!

Everyone on du should listen to this...I've felt disconected since I'm not where there are any Kerry/Edwards Rallies and this was like a B12 shot in the arm!

Someone was saying earlier on du that Kerry hadn't been speaking about the Supreme Court..well, he is on the Tom Joyner show.

I love Tom Joyner and that woman sounded great, too..Cybil was her name?

8. Tom Joyner is outa sight!

I wish that his show was on in Los Angeles.
I really miss him.

He and Tavis hold African American forums with leading Black intellectuals.
They do this about 2 timrs a year on CSPAN.
One was on "The Black Family"
One was on " Religion in the Black Communityh"

Don't miss it the next time.

Since I replied to your post from LA, first let me ask - is the TJMS REALLY not on the air in Los Angeles? Holy Moly! I live in central Alabama and even I can listen on the way to work (well, ok, if the weather is decent and I stay off the county roads!).

Great article posted on the BAW website (home to the Tom Joyner Morning Show) for those interested:

I don't think it should matter, but for what it is worth, I am not African American. I grew up white, Southern and economically privileged. But I did NOT grow up as a dummy, and I see what's what. And I am taking at least six friends to the next Democratic Party meeting in my county next week - friends of all races and backgrounds, all of whom have a great deal to offer to Kerry's campaign. And none of whom would have volunteered on their own. Let's pay attention to each other, people!

11. Oh yeah, born and raised
right here, in everyone's favorite scapegoat of a state!

I'll admit that after high school I struck out to see the world, and that is exactly what I did. I've lived in urban and rural settings in the states, as well as abroad in Africa and the Middle East.

All those experiences have shaped who I am today. But I would never have had those experiences had some flame inside me not been nurtured throughout my formative years - which were ALL spent in Alabama. And not in some left-leaning, exception-to-the-rule liberal family. Heck, I still haven't convinced my father that voting for Bush is against everything good in his soul. But I haven't given up yet - and I'm not going to disrespect him or denounce him as evil no matter what he does come November.

I am as comfortable speaking to the local Rotary Club as I am listening to Tom Joyner. And I am nothing unique. If some ordinary white chick from nowhere, Alabama, can open her mind, I think we all can.

17. You and my mom have a lot in common. Is there a link to this radio
interview?

Sometimes I wonder about a lot of people who post here. In many ways, we are a lot like the opposition when it come to matters of race. It's really sad. It's really sad to look at those in our Congress who really stood up and spoke out against what we all knew was a bad group of people for our nation. I admire them and wish that I had half their guts.

Did I miss the link to this show? If I did, please re-post.
Thank you.

14. Beautiful post!!

Unless it just happened, there is no Tom Joyner in Los Angeles! :(
He was here and someone else took over that station.

I love your thoughts on bringing ALL friends into the Kerry camp.
On the flip side of that, I have met live long friends, of all colors, through my Kerry Campaign experiences.

12. It was good stuff!
I missed a lot of it this morning but I caught the replay a little while ago. It would be nice if we could have a president who isn't afraid to talk to black people, you know?

Just one self-kick on this one. I am still holding out hope that there are more than nine DUers interested in this topic.

I'm not convinced that most DU'ers know who Tom Joyner is.

I listened to both tapes, thank you. I'm convinced that Kerry prescreened the questions, because Tavis' questions were BANGIN' and I wish Joyner had used them.

The question about appointing African-Americans to "non-traditional" cabinet positions was SOOOOOOOOO on point. I really wanted to hear that one.

On the other hand, the question about not supporting the CBC about Florida voting would have been so embarrassing.... I just have no words on that one.

And we won't say anything about the question of why a majority of Americans think that a lyin', cheatin', draft dodgin', sittin'-in-a classroom-for-seven-minutes, reckless, arrogant, preferential treatment gettin', excuse makin', splittin'-verbs busted-infinitive dangling-participle no correct English speaking, silver-spoon-in-his- mouth cowboy from Texas should be re-elected... or what that says about American voters.

I think Kerry needs to know that many of these questions need answers. I guess we're going to have to keep asking them until he responds.

21. Smiley's final zinger at Bush
Made my week! Thanks for posting his words above! I tried to download a copy of his comments at the website that hosts TJMS, but I guess it is copyright protected.

His tough question suggestions for Kerry were great, I agree. Too bad they weren't asked.

DU isn't the right forum for African-American Dem issues...

I'm still looking for the "right" forum...

20. If you find it
Please let me know!!!

I was so disappointed in the lack of interest on this board in Kerry's appearance on the Tom Joyner Morning Show. Heck, even if you don't have a personal interest in the show, I would think any smart Democrat would at least pretend to be interested in this, considering the importance that black voters could (and I hope will) play in this presidential election.

I'm as white as they come, but admire people like Tom, Tavis and the members of the CBC who are willing to speak the truth no matter where the chips may fall.
