If you had to evacuate RIGHT now could you?
Thinking about he situation in Florida and a thread in LBN got me to wondering if I had to drop everything and evacuate right now how far could I go.

I have about 3 gallons of gas in my car which would get me around 80 miles away with no traffic, with traffic probably half that. 6 dollars cash in my pockets about 50 bucks available on my credit card and about 150 or so dollars in the bank. Looking at that I can see why people say the hell with it and decide to stay where they are.

1. I feel badly for some of the people who are reluctant to leave.
Some of them are too poor to do much, also.

However, unlike the scenario you show, everyone has had several days to plan.

6. Even with several days to plan
The best I could do is pack more stuff up and maybe have it stored somewhere that still doesn't add money to the old bank account. Just glad I live in the city and out of the flood plain.

I feel so bad for the working poor of Florida or any other disaster prone area. I have some friends that live in an apartment complex here that floods fairly often. They hate the fact that every few years they lose pretty much everything they own depending on how fast and high the water comes in but they arec willing to take the risk becasuse it's way cheaper to live there than in a non-flood prone complex.

2. My friend who lives near Orlando is sending his wife away
But he's staying in their house, which is "manufactured," a term for a glorified house trailer. I'm not happy about his decision but he said that since the storm was downgraded, he wants to stay. Yeah, but it could upgrade itself just as quick and then it's too late to do anything. During Charley, he barely got out in time so maybe he feels invulnerable or something...

3. my friend just left her home
She just moved there about eight months ago and put a lot into making this new home her style. Now her birds are staying with a vet and she's taken her two dogs with her to a friend's house and is staying up north.

It would be rough indeed to do a renovation--even a partial one--and then lose it.

7. it would be wild fires here, which means 6 hours notice at best.
This week? Right now? No, I couldn't do it.

During the height of wildfire season? You betcha. The tanks never go below half (even the monster truck that must be fed on virgin's blood and Cheney compassion....) the cat carriers, leashes and harnesses are in the living room, there are two suitcases in the bedroom with clothes in them, an easily accessible food and bedding and toiletry kit, the tent and the propane stove (without cylinders, those are in the house) are in the truck, and the computers can be packed up in 5 minutes or less. There are advantages to having nothing but laptops...

Blizzards are the opposite - if the worst happens, we're trying to get here; this house is far safer in a blizzard than his office or mine; we have gas heat.

8. Nowhere.
I don't evacuate, period. There's noplace on the planet that is safer than my house. It's grossly overbuilt, on top of a decent hill, has it's own natural water supply, a root cellar, a generator, et cetera. Plus, all my cheese and guns and stuff are here.
