"Liberals are not for anything that the Bible teaches"
"They are for abortion, gay rights, everything that the Lord Jesus Christ says is wrong. I don't see how a Christian could be a Democrat and feel good about it, when they are for every sinful thing that the Bible says is wrong".

Letter to the Editor in my paper today.

... Loving the little children
... Doing unto others as you would have them do to you
... Turning swords into plowshares
... Condemning those who would make riches from religion
... Healing the sick

Man, looks like we're going straight to the lake of fire!

4. remove the beam from your own eye
before you look for the mote in mine.

didn't Jesus say to give to the poor? and love thy neighbor as thyself?

leviticus (the only book in the Old Testament that mentions homosexuality that i have heard) also says it's ok to sell your daughter, to kill anyone who touchs shellfish or pork

google the "letter to Dr Laura" and you'll get a few more "biblical" issues

21. He didn't.
However, he did say some nice things about Judge not, lest ye be judged (Matt. 7:1), to pray only quietly and secretly (matt 5:7) and not parade one's faith in the streets (or the papers, I guess); to no be boastful (Matt 6:1-3), avoid hypocrisy (Matt 7:3-4), to encourage progressive taxation (Mark 12:42-44 - the Widow's mite story); treat others as you wish to be treated (Luke 6:31-34) and be merciful (Luke 6:36)

Jesus never mentions either - all mentions of homosexuality are by Paul (and we know what a flake paul was); and all of the abortion discussion are in the old testament. Both quites, as it happens. Exodus 21:22-23 "If men strive, and hurt a woman with child, so that her fruit depart from her, and yet no mischief follow: he shall be surely punished, according as the woman's husband will lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges determine. And if any mischief follow, then thou shalt give life for life."

Hosea 13:16 "Samaria shall become desolate; for she hath rebelled against her God: they shall fall by the sword: their infants shall be dashed in pieces, and their women with child shall be ripped up."

Now, that latter one makes me think that abortion is okay if god is using it against his enemies.

Yeah. I'm cynical about the bible.

...abortion or gay rights.

He DID talk a lot about compassion, humility, forgivness, and something about turning the other cheek, seven time3s, or seventy times seven, as need be.

If the writer doesn't see how a Christian could be a Democrat and feel good about it, maybe s/he should try becoming both (because s/he's obviously neither).

8. Whoever wrote it doesn't read much of the Bible.
I'm not a Christian, but the teachings of Jesus (the parts not rehashed by Paul) certainly strike a chord with this Democrat/Socialist.

Jesus had a few unkind words to say about the rich and powerful and a lot of fine things to say about caring for the poor and powerless.

24. because there's a huge difference between BaPtists and BaBtists.
The former are excellently represented by Jimmy Carter.

The latter are like my father - beat the wife, beat the kids, lie at work, steal from the boss, cheat on your wife, father illegitimate children and pay for a couple of abortions, pay child support on the others that their mothers want to keep at the expense of your legitimate children's well being, raise hell, drink to excess, cuss, and be a general tartar and cuss Monday through Saturday, and go to meetin' clean and cheery on Sunday morning and be certain that god's going to love you.

That's the difference.

11. How about this for a response
As a Christian and a Democrat, might I remind you of the wisdom of Matthew, chapter 7:

Judge not lest ye be judged. For as ye judge, so shall ye be judged. And with what measure ye mete, with the same shall it be measured to you again. Why seest thou a mote in thy brother's eye, and perceivest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Or why sayest thou to thy brother: suffer me to pluck out a mote out of thine eye, and behold a beam is in thine own eye. Hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye, and then shalt thou see clearly to pluck out the mote out of thy brother's eye.

Edited on Fri Sep-03-04 03:01 PM by GiovanniC
Was complaining about how the Democrats always want to raise taxes to fund stupid things like -- I'm not making this up -- Education. He's a Repub but he goes by the Libertarian belief that government should not fund any education, that it should all be up to local communities.

I asked him who's face was on the dollar bill. He looked at me strange and said, "Why?"

I asked him again.

"George Washington."

"Then render unto Washington what is Washington's and quit complaining about teaching second graders multiplication."

He wasn't very impressed.

Here's some more of what he said, "The way I think about it is this: If they are not for the things of Jesus, I am not for them". This person is so brainwashed that it would be useless, I believe, to try and change his mind. What I will do, however, is complain to the editor about printing such stupidity.

23. I'm for anything in the Bible that correlates with logic and common sense.
IE: The Golden Rule - Do unto others as you would have done unto yourself

If it conflicts with common sense, logic and human rights, it belongs in the trash can.

You can have mumbo jumbo in your house, but I will have no part of it.

33. There's virtually nothing in the Bible about abortion.
Edited on Fri Sep-03-04 04:44 PM by CBHagman
However, it is possible to make both a pro-life and a pro-choice case based on Scripture. For example, in the Old Testament (one of the books of the law; I forget which one), it says that a woman who is injured by another person and miscarries must be compensated, but there is no suggestion that the miscarriage is an actual murder.

The Old and the New Testament have passages that could be useful to pro-lifers, such as the Gospel passage on St. John the Baptist leaping for joy within his mother's womb.

However, there are plenty of devout people who are also pro-choice (Orthodox Jew Joe Lieberman, for example).

The Gospels contain no passages on homosexuality, though there's a lot on the spiritual dangers of being judgmental, feuding, lack of generosity to the poor, etc. The entire book of Matthew in particular is full of things that ought to make a lot of us squirm.

Christ's commandment to love your neighbor as yourself.

Christ's admonition to the rich man to sell all that he has and give the money to the poor.

"You cannot serve both God and mammon."

"Render unto Caesar that which is Caesar's." I love reminding right wingers that Jesus was pro-taxes! He also made a tax collector one of his twelve apostles.

and build shelters for the homeless; fight for the rights of those less fortunate; spend time in AIDS hospices; comfort the elderly; ensure that the mega-wealthy are held accountable; fight for peace instead of war; look for the good in all people; want safety, education and health for our children; and believe that government can actually affect society for the good.

Nah, you won't find a word about any of these in the Bible!

40. Language.
Why does Old English make the statements in the bible sound so religious? Ya know, the "thou","thine", "spaketh" etc.

Until I was about 14 I thought that was how the folks at that time actually spoke. ;)

44. "Thou" and "you" had different connotations
Thou and you were hopelessly mangled in the Middle English period, but, in essence, thou was a way of addressing commoners and you was a way of addressing nobility. Also, the King James Bible to which you are referring ("'thou', 'thine', 'spaketh' etc.") is considered Modern English, not Old English. It's not a separate language, since we can easily understand it, unlike Middle and Old English.

Just thought I'd throw that in there -- I have to justify all of those outstanding student loans somehow, right? I wonder if I could get a government grant to support my habit of ranting about linguistic trivia on the Internet...
