Veterans: PEACETIME - WARTIME (Whatever) - Would YOU Toss Your Medals?
Edited on Wed Sep-01-04 07:44 PM by matcom
I want to talk about the unthinkable here. Let us "Assume" that "W" gets another term.

Would YOU stand in front of the White House and toss your ribbons over the fence?

I think I would.

HOW MANY of us would join in?

We have access to the White House Fence. Would you JOIN ME??

I'm sorry to rehash a previous issue but I am REALLY interested in your take on this.

THANK YOU.

be honest please.

its important

1. You earned them, matcom.
They are yours to do with as you will. Just remember they represent something at least to me and thousands of other grateful DUers. Bush would have one of his butlers just sweep em up and toss them. Or wear them.

and do it after Ben Barnes' appearance on 60 minutes.

Why let Bush have any opportunity to take office?

4. No
They are mine.

I will say this; my ribbons and a few dollars would buy me a beer. From personal experience most people could not care less that I am a veteran in the first place. Keep your honors. They are yours.

I am also a disabled Veteran. I learned not to share that information too.

6. i had an image
after reading about all the heartache these attacks have personally caused so many of our veterans, on DU and elsewhere. the pain, the hurt, that has been caused to those who have sacrificed for their nation and country so that we can have the right to believe whatever the hell we want to believe needs to be shown.

the image i see in my head was of a solemn procession of veterans throwing their medals over the fence with a bunch of bagpipers playing "amazing grace". it brought a tear to my eye...much like many of your (and other DU veterans) posts did.

8. I wouldn't throw my medals
Edited on Wed Sep-01-04 08:43 PM by abburdlen
because they would be wasted on the whitehouse.
I would join anyone who wanted to stand in front of the whitehouse and remind all americans the oath we swore

"I, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God."

10. In my case, it's "medal." singular
I only earned the National Defense Service Medal (the "I graduated Basic Training" medal) and, no, I don't know that I would on my own initiative. But, if you're going to do it, buddy, I'm there with you.
John
I don't know what it would accomplish. I don't know what it accomplished way back when, either. But I'm all for futile gestures.
And I AM being honest here.

17. Yes, but mine aren't terribly impressive
I've got a marksmanship w/ oak leaf cluster, and some unit citation and good conduct sort of stuff. No heroism medals so I doubt I'd garner much but an amused look from the WH.

Still they have cheapened what I EARNED and worse cheapened those medals that others won by more difficult efforts. Yes, I would throw mine over (I'd have to buy another set, but I'd throw 'em)

20. I'll have to barrow someone elses.
I got one I think everyone gets just for showing up for National Service or something and something for marksmanship because I shot a rifle. They should have given me one for the Worlds Worst Soldier.

21. Here's a clue
We are not talking about dishonoring our service but rather expressing our disgust in the way veterans are being smeared with the SBFT crap.

Don't you have a pep rally to watch?

19. Sure I'd throw them
if I'd received them in a foolish war. I'd be throwing with the intent of hitting whistle ass in the head. As it is my peace time medals aren't very valuable to me. Just something I got while doing my time.

form of protest involving my medals would be in order.

Glue them to my naked chest and streak across the White House lawn
Screaming "KISS MY ASS! , KISS MY ASS!" as the Secret Service Chases after Me.

Who's in?

I'll bring sunscreen....

24. Not sure I'd do that, but I'd give you 100.00 dollars to do it!
I'd definitely pay to see that---AND, as an added bonus, I'd be willing to testify to your sanity at the competency hearing they'd likely force you into!

Oh, I'll pay for the sunscreen for ya as well. (See, we AF people are delightful aren't we? Always ready to help!)

23. I Served This Country, Not Bush
I would never throw my medals. I didn't serve Bush, I served my country. That isn't to say that those who throw their medals are wrong. They may have reasons to do so. But, just to protest the then serving President doesn't seem sufficient enough.

Instead of throwing medals, we should show the same fighting spirit we showed in the military to unseat unworthy office-holders. Go round up at least two other people to vote ..... and to vote the right way. That way, every veteran has three votes. That will do more for our country than throwing medals.
