Are freepers going to try and have Bill Maher arrested for inciting riot?
Edited on Fri Aug-27-04 11:22 PM by gmaki
On his show he challenged the protestors to riot. Nothing subtle about it. Some of the funniest lines I have heard in awhile but I can't imagine the right is not going to go nuts over this.

Bill O'Reilly for one is going to lose his mind.

I can really picture a scenario where they start a drive to have him charged.

Edited to fix misspelling.

2. Megadittos on that
He really went for it on that bit. It's called comedy, folks, but you gotta figure he's going to become a lightning rod over it.

3. It was a hoot.
I saw it too and thought the same thing. I'm laughing so hard it hurts and thinking the right is going to go ballistic. Maher's schtick was good enough to merit at least three O'Lielly splotches. It's a pity that political satire is wasted on the humorless right.

22. "Not worth the hemp in your Timberlands!"
I haven't laughed so hard in a long time as I did at Maher's rant on protesters.

Afterward, through tears and much coughing, I asked my wife, "Do you think that Maher will get called on that?"

But God, it was *funny.*

4. Ironic that it would only help them.
The reality is that the '68 Chicago riots may have gotten Nixon elected. So let's cool it, kids!:hippie:

11. I guess that means you think it'll help?
Maybe it will feel good, but there are more Law 'n Order types out there than you think, and a fiasco like '68 will get 'em plenty motivated.

16. sorry, I think you might not have that quite right
there were a lot of reasons Nixon got elected, but I don't think the riots were one of them.

Nixon promised to get us out of Vietnam. He was, of course, lying.

Kissinger made sure that the war actually got worse, so Nixon could come in and look like the good guy.

19. Just wondering..
How old were you at the time? Do you remember it, or have you just read about it? What you say is true, but promising to get us out of Vietnam was not the only reason Nixon won either.

20. I'm 43, so I was very young
but yes, I have read a lot about it.

And I know a lot of what you can read about back then is about as "balanced" as what you read today.

5. I don't think there will be trouble.....
...because Shawn Hannity warned that the more civil unrest in NY, the sillier us liberals will look.

I don't want to look silly, maybe everyone will stay home.

If not, I can't imagine the news cameras leaving the thrilling events at MSG to cover something so obviously sensational as a million protesters.

Eat shit, Bill O'Reilly

12. Democracy is on the streets
I for one hope that there are confrontations, and stuff does happen. I don't wanna see violence against people, which would almost definitely be caused by the cops, but I wouldn't mind seeing what happened in Seattle happen in New York. I'm tired of people waiting until November, convinced that it will bring about some great change of tides where everything wrong with our country up to that point will be fixed by John Kerry. Democracy is not every four years. Democracy is not in the pollbooth. Democracy is the protestors in New York. Democracy is the EZLN fighting for autonomy in Mexico. Democracy is right here, and right now. People need to make their voice heard. I won't cry at the smashed Gap store. Change won't come through submission.

14. I wondered about the wisdom of his closing comments
as he was making them - yes they were funny, but I believe he could be charged with incitement. I hope it doesn't happen, but we know how desparate the right are.
