2. What did they die for? Nothing.
Cannon fodder for the military industrial complex and the bottom line.

3. Nevermind that!
Let's argue some more about what did or didn't happen on Hap River 35 years ago! That's what's important.

26 dead in a week. 963 total. If that rate keeps up, we'll have lost our 1,000th soldier in Iraq right about the time Stupidhead steps up to the microphone to start his acceptance speech for the Republican nomination.

Think the Republicans will pause for a moment of silence? Or will they be too busy digging for dirt on the deceased who are obviously trying to embarrass our Dear Leader by dying untimely?

5. What does network news have to say?
And cable, for that matter? I watch very little network or cable news anymore. Do they even mention Iraq? Do they mention the dead soldiers? Do they tell their names, or are they just numbers?

6. You wont hear squat from them until it's 1000
then they'll get all introspective and start issuing another round of mea culpas ala wapo an nyt about how shitty they have been in their coverage.

8. What I've seen on the networks
They mention KIA, sometimes even with a name or a photo, but usually just in conjunction with a report on whatever was going on that day that resulted in the KIAs: "Two Marines were killed today in some senseless action in a place you've never heard of before. But don't be too concerned, the guys who were killed there had never heard of it, either. But now at least two families will always remember Banjafarquar or some such."

Other than that, not a whole lot.

7. And 6,500 wounded
with 3,657 too severely wounded to return to duty. Hundreds of lost arms, legs, and eyes, and some with grotesquely burned and mangled bodies. 8,000 total casualties including wounded and dead by November. Why aren't at least a couple of minutes a day being devoted to the human cost of war in our media?
