Parents! You may only have DAYS! Put your CHILD on MILITARY NO-CALL LIST!
Edited on Sun Aug-22-04 07:35 PM by Dems Will Win
Consider yourself warned.

Under a provision of the No Cannon Fodder Left Behind Act, High Schools are required to give your number to military RECRUITERS!!!!!

HOWEVER!

If you call the school and ask that YOUR PHONE NUMBER NOT BE GIVEN TO THE LOCAL RECRUITING OFFICE, they will not GIVE OUT YOUR NUMBER!!

Military calls teens with help of schools

Federal law requires sharing of students' phone numbers

PETER SMOLOWITZ

Staff Writer

Thousands of parents must act in the next few days or a little-known provision of the federal No Child Left Behind Act may catch them by surprise.

The law requires high schools to give the names and phone numbers of juniors and seniors to military recruiters who could call and encourage them to enlist.

Supporters of the 2-year-old law say it ensures that teenagers know the military is an option. And, they say, it helps keep the armed forces strong at a time when wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have sparked debate about whether to reinstate the draft.

Parents can notify schools in writing if they don't want their children's information released. For several local districts, including Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, the deadline for that falls next week.

3. though its a horrible tactic
its not as grave as you might think. i do know there are a lot of kids who would be swayed by such propaganda, i have had my share of mil. recruiters, due to the ACT giving out info. i just tell them politely that im not interested and hang up. if they call again, i do it again. and so on.... but after all that, i completely support this no call list, though i suspect it wont mean shit to the military

4. The draft may be coming....
and it is going to hurt the all volunteer Army. Hell, a lot of us who volunteered of our own free will are feeling a bit disgruntled over the last few years....how much worse will it be with gangs of teens who never wanted to serve in the first place?

Although, things are going to get deperate over the next few years, because troop strenght is going to drop.

For the record, this is my last enlistment. Not by choice, but for medical reasons.

People should volunteer to join the service. It is the only way to keep our military strong, with people who actually want to be there.

5. what a bizarre provision
I wonder what the story is on who initiated this and whether it was debated or what.

I also think it's strange it's not more publicized, I wonder how many people know about this.

6. Congressman David Vitter (R-LA)
From the above article:

The impetus for the change came even before the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. Congressman David Vitter, a Louisiana Republican, heard a Pentagon estimate that 2,000 high schools allowed colleges to recruit on campus but banned military recruiters. He proposed granting them equal access.

"Students deserve to be informed about all of the options available to them as they decide what their post-high school ambitions hold," Vitter wrote on his Web site. "Allowing the military the opportunity to recruit ... is not only in the best interests of America, but it is in the best interests of our students as well."

I have a 15 year old son. I am scared, angry and very unhappy.

8. Me either.
Just because someone joins the service does not mean they are getting a death sentence. There is more to being in the military than killing, prostitutes and tattoos. Some people actually do benefit from military service, no matter how brief. Look at the two men fighting it out for the most powerful office on earth.

9. But what about the parents..and the kids?
My son enlisted when he was 19..in the army..been in the reserves for the past 4 yrs...was in Iraq for two yrs the first time around..now he is in the reserves..should have been out by now..but this week just got his order to go to Iraq yet again. He is 42..he didnt expect this added "benefit" when he was recruited out of high school. Sure he expected to serve when called...but now things change and he cannot get out as promised...as expected..and at age 42..back to iraq.

16. Could you explain that last sentence?
Do you mean that Kerry and Bush have both benefited from military service?

11. Recruiting gets pretty heavy in blue collar areas
Parents can't afford college. Military offers it.

12. Well, that is a good point, except they forget one thing....
By the time I get out of the Army, college is not going to be a viable option. I have two children, and my wife will not be able to work enough to support all of us while I go to school. So since my kids have grown accustomed to three meals a day, I will have to put college off. Luckily for me, my MOS translates into a decent paying job when I get out. For kids going in for only four years, it is an option, as long as they dont get married or in debt while in the service....Which is kind of like saying if they win the lotto.

13. I know 2 HS counselors who were wined, dined, and given rides in ...
... everything from jet fighters to nuclear subs.

The trips were given every couple of years.

Very few of their kids ever saw a college classroom after serving in the military.

Folks around there viewed the military as part of the process of growing-up.

15. Deferring marriage
is NOT like winning the lotto. You made a choice. Having a family was more important than waiting until after you finished your enlistment and then got your college degree. Nothing wrong with that, but LOTS of enlistees complete an Associates while IN the service and then finish their Bachelor's with today's version of the GI Bill. It's all about the decisions you make.
