Howard Dean - Classy and Gutsy
From the Dean blog -
"a veteran of WWII who was passionately against the war in Iraq asked the governor, 'Will you be the first one to stand up and tell the parents of those slain soldiers how senseless it was."

"And the governor looked straight at him and said 'No sir. I will not, and I'll tell you why. I would never exploit or intrude on the grief of anyone.'"

For the media - that definitely ain't pandering!

2. how do you figure…
when the DLC and DLC candidates (read: Lieberman) are busy issuing statements every day proclaiming that Dean's left-wing policies are gonna hurt the Party's chances at winning the White House?

8. Lieberman did that on his own
he didn't have to ask anyone's permission

and he said that Dean was unelectable because that is what he believes, and what most people who've assessed the situation well enough believe

22. Lieberman did that with Al From's and Bruce Reed's support, IMHO
Edited on Sun Aug-24-03 09:08 PM by w4rma
An internal Democratic Leadership Council memo leaked to press on May 14 says:

"But the great myth of the current cycle is the misguided notion that the hopes and dreams of activists represent the heart and soul of the Democratic Party."

Al From, founder and CEO of the Democratic Leadership Council and Bruce Reed, President of the DLC, yesterday circulated this memo to “Leading Democrats” in which they argue that traditional Democratic values are “an aberration” and that the thousands of grassroots Democrats inspired by Governor Dean’s message to “take back our party” are “activist elites” and not “real Democrats.”

This vicious attack was not just an attack on Howard Dean, but an attack on the very people who care about health care for all Americans, who care about adequate funding for school boards, and who care that this country provide moral leadership in the international community.

We need your help to respond now. Tell the Democratic Leadership Council today that this kind of divisiveness will not win back this country.

4. Dean is more represenative of the DLC's rank'n'file
rather than the DLC's inept leadership.

21. This may be true
We had a big rally for Dean to coincide with the DLC National Conversation in Philly, and afterwards we went and mingled with some of them at the Irish Pub. A lot of them were interested in Dean and seemed receptive. It is just their leadership (From and Reed) whom I don't like. Most of the delegates to the convention, which included a lot of state and national elected officials from all over, seemed pretty cool, and they definitely seemed like regular Democrats...not Republican-lite. The ones I talked to were just as angry at how much the Bush administration is screwing this country over as we are.

23. Dean will hand Bush his ass on a platter
I say that as someone from Vermont who knows what kind of a politician, leader and campaigner Howard Dean is. Dean is a centrist and always has been. So am I. The only people who won't support Dean are the fringe radicals on both sides. I do see the potential for a landslide...but it'd be a landslide in Dean's favor.

Do NOT fear Civil Unions. In fact, you should be praying that Bush and Rove are dumb enough to make it an issue. It will backfire and be a re-play of what happened in Vermont in 2000. Let them stir up hate from the far right and let them spout it all over. The reaction of the rest of the country will be complete and utter disgust. People who opposed Civil Unions here were a heck of a lot more offended by the hatred coming from the right than they were by Civil Unions and they re-elected Dean. On top of that, Dean has experience defending Civil Unions. He CAN sell gay rights and responsibilities to middle America and win. With all the new voters Dean is energizing all over the country, if the Democratic party unites behind him he CAN'T lose.

14. When I say DLC, I mean From and Reed, just like
when I say DNC, I mean Terry the idiot MacAulliffe, and their leadership, not the members.

I think I agree with what someone else said, his experience as a physician gives him a real sense of the realities and difficulties of grieving.

20. excellent response
Funny to see the bitterness of an anti-Deanite even on a topic where it wouldn't hurt a bit to concede that indeed, this was a classy way to answer.

Ah smallness abounds!! And it ain't just the neo-cons!!
