Lima talk show host Dennis Shreefer, who's not been afraid of attacking the Bush administration, Republican Congressman Mike Oxley, and the Republican power base in the area, held a news conference today.
As he explained on his talk show, he stated that county Republican party chair Keith Cheney has pressured advertisers to pull from Shreefer's show, or else he would call for a boycott of that business by the county's Republicans. Shreefer also claimed that his constant bashing of Congressman Oxley has resulted in Cheney commenting that it has cut into Oxley's support, leading Cheney to deploying people to discredit Shreefer. Shreefer constantly attacks Oxley having his permanent residence in Virginia and no residence in his congressional district, his long list of campaign contributors (which was recently documented in an investigative series by the Toledo Blade), and his lack of action on behalf of his constituents.
Shreefer's Arbitron ratings for this period plunged from a 10 share, to under a 3 share, and advertisers have virtually disappeared. Shreefer claims that some of the advertisers have admitted being pressured to withdraw advertising from the show.
Shreefer says the main focus of today's news conference is to bring attention to what he calls the "Soviet" style of government control of our media, where only the voice in support of the government can take the airwaves. To those who said the conservative ideology is what prevails in America today, Shreefer said that the 2000 presidential elections were split 50-50, so there are people who do not agree with the prevailing conservative side that dominates the radio waves. It's just that they are unable to voice their opinions as freely as conservatives due to economic pressures wielded by conservatives.
Shreefer called the big drop in his Arbitron rating an "anomaly." His detractors say his constant bashing of Republicans has driven away listeners.
Personally, I think Shreefer's claim of the Arbitron rating being an anomaly remains to be seen. But, he's 100% right on about the Republican political machine in the Lima area wielding intimidation tactics to anyone who doesn't march to their orders.
