The desecration of the graveyard of Najaf will be the wars biggest mistake
With over 2 million Shiite Muslims buried there including Imam Ali, the son-in-law of the prophet Muhammad, the U.S will ignite a powder keg from hell.

Folks...this is the turning point in this war and it ain't for the better.

2. Are there any reports of damages done yet?
And if "the Coalition" hit Ali's grave, "powder keg" isn't the word for what's going to be ignited over there. :evilfrown:

3. I've read reports of past missions within the cemetary
Edited on Wed Aug-11-04 02:28 PM by trumad
where tombs of families have been destroyed. The U.S is very very close to entering the Graveyard for the final push against the militia of Al Sadr. That means a whole bunch of death and destruction. This will ignite the Muslim world for years to come.

5. THAT CEMETARY IS HUGE
ABOUT 12 MILES SQUARE.

Not that it makes any difference. There have been battles in there several times - I think.

4. A calculated political decision on the part of the al Mahdi army
and a very effective one.

The US could have turned a corner if they had chosen diplomacy over force with al-Sadr. Too late.

Do they have the slightest CLUE what that may set off?

15. If people had ANY understanding of what Najaf means, I'd agree..
But with the media we have now, who knows WHAT people were thinking when they voted?

But, in general, CNN polls aren't worth wiping one's arse with.

Cemetery Fight Haunts Some U.S. Troops
'It Doesn't Feel Right Sometimes,' Soldier Says of Eerie, Perilous Battle in Najaf

By Karl Vick
Washington Post Foreign Service
Wednesday, August 11, 2004; Page A01

NAJAF, Iraq, Aug. 10 -- Bats flapped out of crypts, startling soldiers creeping through the cemetery with guns up. Graves opened beneath their combat boots. And an old enemy displayed a new professionalism, darting in clearly practiced moves between tombstone and mausoleum to stalk the Americans from above ground and below.

In the battle to control one of the world's largest graveyards, U.S. Marines and soldiers say they are coping with a lot, including lingering regret. The vast cemetery in Najaf is sacred to Shiite Muslims, perhaps 2 million of whom lie buried in miles of desert adjoining the shrine of Imam Ali, son-in-law of the prophet Muhammad.

Soldiers involved in the fighting described how many of the most recent graves are marked by photos, which crumble when U.S. forces shell the cemetery walls to reach the militiamen hiding within.

"Wives, daughters, husbands," said Sgt. Hector Guzman, 28, of the 1st Cavalry Division's 5th Regiment. "You just know you're destroying that tomb."

The Houston native shook his head. "It doesn't feel right sometimes."...

16. Talk about low--how low can we go?
This disturbs me so much. But--I don't know if it will phase most of the warmongers in our society--I just talked to my neighbor (registered Democrat--but in crazy about governor gropanator) she is hoping that we flatten the whole city (not only the cemetery). I tried to tell her how bad this would be--but she kept saying that we have to hurt them REALLY REALLY BAD.

You can't reason with people like this. And she is supposed to be a "Democrat" (although she voted for the Arnold--so I will never trust her entirely).

17. "It doesn't feel right sometimes."...
And that squashing of higher instinct to "do a job," defined by those who could give a rat's ass about anything but the green lining their pockets, is just as real an injury as shrapnel ripping flesh.
