Why do the 10 Commandments have to be removed from the building?
Edited on Sat Aug-23-03 09:58 AM by Changenow
Can’t they move them to a supply closet until the protesters leave? How about butting a table cloth and a board on them and use them as a display shelf? Those things could stay in the building but not on display for years if necessary, what it the urgency about having them removed from the premises. Or in the alternative, what about a jackhammer?

My point is that this thing has become more dramatic than necessary fueling the hysteria.

1. The particulars don't matter
Why should liberals get into a p*ssing match with fundies over when, where, and how the thing is removed? They made a move to have the state sanction their establishment of religion, we took them to court, and they lost. They have to remove it, or get fined, and at some point they'll try something again.

Let's not snatch defeat from the jaws of victory by letting ourselves get smeared as anti-10 commandment radicals.

2. I guess that's what I mean.
If it is removed from the rotunda and hidden away there won’t be much point to hanging around the building. Some of those people must have jobs they need to get back to, well a few of them anyway. When things calm down have it removed from the building on a rainy Saturday afternoon in January and be done with it.

3. Covering up may fuel the hysteria even more
Hysteria is coming from fundies side, not ours

4. Nevermind, there is a story in LBN
that says that it will be moved to a nonpublic part of the building.

I know that the protesters are not liberals, but removing the statue as they protest would only draw in more of them.

5. God's Courtroom
How about we just line up those fundies, interrogate them under torture and inflict Biblical penalties on any who have broken even one of their own commandments? Let them be the model for good social and civic behavior.

Start with searches of their homes. Any human images displayed? Ever taken a photo? Own a stuffed animal or a Mickey Mouse watch? Mortal sin. Eternal damnation. Unto the third generation. Stone 'em.

Ever taken the Lord's name in vain? Even "gosh darn" is anathema! Cut out their tongues.

Ah, the sabbath. Not the day for watching football or washing the car. No work. Or forcing your employees to work. Not even animals. No shopping at Wal-Mart. A day devoted to Bible reading and prayer. Keep it holy. Burn the violators of the blue laws at the stake. Blue light special, anyone?

Argue with your parents? Fail to do what they ask? Beat the child. Spare the rod and break the commandment. Kill the unruly child with a stick.

Thou Shalt Not Kill. Only applies to some. Violators otherwise sentenced to death row to await execution.

Adultery. Ah, line up folks. The penalty for this crime in ancient times differed depending on the local customs. How about tying the guilty couple together and throwing them in the river? If they drown, it proves their innocence.

So now we come to theft. Stealing. Absconding with. Chop off their hands. Then stone them.

Bearing false witness against thy neighbor. Lying. This commandment may drastically reduce the population of the United States not to mention turn the white house and the halls government into ghost towns. Certainly all liars should have their pants set on fire.

And finally, we come to the last commandment. The one about coveting thy neighbor's possessions. Boil such individuals in oil. Their neighbor's oil.

So, who wants to be tried in God's courtroom?

Hypocrites.

I do agree with the original poster that this is fueling the martyr syndrome so predominate among the fanatical. When Jesus died on the cross, wasn't the 'Old Law' wiped away? I don't get it.

On edit: for poor grammar

8. Let it ride.
Just let Alabama deal with it. Cover it up, move it, defy the feds, whatever. The fundie taliban are doing a fine job of showing the world what they are. Hell, I checked out the freeperasylum to see their reaction, and was surprised to see that even some of those morons (of the libertarian persuasion of lunacy) were attacking the loopie demonstrators for the goofy antics. Of course, most of them were calling on God to smite the liberals, screaming about the "commie" supreme court, quoting scripture all over the place, and talking hopefully about civil war.

I find the whole thing hilarious.

9. There may be more to this story than meets the eye.....
There is an organized effort to make the 10 Commandments the new "Constitution" of sorts. Check this web site out:

http://www.tencommandments.org/ (Society for the Practical Establishment and Perpetuation of the Ten Commandments).

.................................

You shall not murder.

You shall not commit adultery.

You shall not steal.

You shall not bear false witness against your

neighbor.

You shall not covet you neighbor's house (or wife).

etc.

Sheesh......GOP must stand for God On the Payroll. If not they're in BIG trouble!

.............

14. media hype -- another media whore distraction --
And we're all falling for it.

I ask -- is this really a big news story? No.

It's right up there with Laci Peterson, Kobe, and gay marriages.

Media whore distractions to keep us diverted from the crimes that are actually being commited by our country.
