snip - Oregon Army National Guardsmen responded to reports of what appeared to be prisoner abuse June 29 at the Iraqi Ministry of the Interior. The Guard soldiers disarmed the Iraqi policemen and gave first aid to the detainees. The Oregon guardsmen were later ordered to stand down, handing the prisoners back over to the Iraqi officials. Many of the prisoners had fresh welts and bruises. Soldiers also found metal rods, rubber hoses, unknown chemicals and exposed electrical wires that appeared to have been used to torture the prisoners.

WHY WERE THEY ORDERED TO STAND DOWN????????!!!!!!!??????
Does anyone know if this is for real, or if this is just internet junk......... God I hope it is junk. Has anyone else heard of this story yet?

3. Absolutely real. And, those are the kind of troops I do support.
Can't say the same for their chickenshit bosses. I hope Wyden really goes after this.

6. You support that?
They let the torture happen?

How can you support that? They were just following orders?

7. Read the article. The troops stopped the torture.
Their bosses ordered them out. One of them even threated to start shooting the torturers if his commander didn't move troops in to stop it. He did, they helped the prisoners, and then anonymous "higher ups" told them to turn them back over to the torturers.

You bet I support troops like those who tried their damndest to stop it.

8. But they didn't stop it.
They started to, but then somebody told them to stop, so they left.

Pure cowardice.

9. Give me a break. What would YOU have done?
Shoot their officers, who were on their side? Cut the prisoners loose and face the tender mercies of a few years in Leavenworth? Just disobey orders and face the same?

They did what they could. Which is a helluva lot more then their bosses did.

5. Hell, we're right back to square one.
So after a year and a half with thousands of US dead & wounded, thousands of Iraqis dead and wounded, over a hundred billion US dollars poured into a bottomless pit, we are right back where we started. I sure as hell wouldn't call this "Mission Accomplished".
