Rise up, Ye Liberals, rise up.....
Edited on Sun Aug-08-04 07:04 PM by Moonbeam_Starlight
The extreme far-right of the socio-political spectrum sought to gain power and control so as to further their agenda and they have been successful. They counted on, and got, many years of liberals muttering about unity and working together, "dialoging" and crossing the aisle.

And I'm all for working together, when it's feasible. But if it's an idealogical battle the far-right wants, it's what they'll get. From this liberal, anyway. I won't flinch and I won't blink, because I happen to think they are wrong and their agenda is harmful to the citizens of this country.

They're counting on "pink tutu" Democrats, but I have a feeling they will be mighty surprised come November and 2006 to find the liberals have indeed had enough.

Who's with me?

2. Unity starts by NOT knocking people in our own party
Just my two cents.

I edited the original post. Sorry for any offense and you are correct. But I do think we need to get people representing us who are willing to stand up and say what needs to be said.....

6. So I guess we should follow like sheep for unity?
Sounds like a Republican idea to me. What if there are infiltrators, like Trojan Horses planted in the party to pull us liberals to the right? The Republicans have already gotten a Trojan Horse in their party, the PNAC, because the Republicans follow the leader only too well.

10. This is twice you have accused me of being a Republican.
Surley you can do better than that.

13. I haven't accused you of anything.
I asked you a question on the other thread about why you loved Bush and you answered that you hated him. Good you gave me an answer. I made a general statement about Republicans following the leader on this on. Surely I can express an opinion can't I? What's with putting words in my mouth anyway?

11. Not sheep, but it would help to realize that more unites us than divides
us. And that goals will be reached faster by working together and -- yes -- sometimes this does include patience or even compromise.

I do think we're united this year -- if on nothing else than get that guy out of here! But I also think there's a lot that we can all accomplish together.

If the mainstream (and I don't think I qualify at all!) doesn't agree with your ideas, then maybe some educating is in order. That might not happen all at once, you know? That's where I lost all respect for someone like Nader. He wasn't, and isn't interested in working for change through the Democratic party. It's just an ego trip now. Calling Democrats and Republicans interchangeable is a great little sound bite, but it's not at all true.

Most of what the Democratic party stands for these days works for me. The things that don't, I'll keep speaking out about, and hoping to change. In this case, I think that's the best way to succeed.

But just my two cents.

15. I'm more specifically referring to the DLC.
I think they have done a lot of harm to our unity. I think they were the cause of the Green Party split off. I realize though that when the GOP took a hard right turn, moderate Republicans started looking at our party and formed this conservative wing of the Democratic party where they could feel more comfortable, but it really divided us.

17. Hmmm...
Yes, I can see that.

What's lacking in that case is maybe a unity of opinion on goals, not just disagreement about how best to reach the goals. If that makes any sense?

democratically? When a Republican strays leftward, the strongarms grab hold--armtwist, threaten, etc.

When a Democrat strays rightward, he's cheered on by the media and by the party leadership.

3. clarification...... with you..... on......?
Voting? you bet!

Working together? You bet....... but, it will HAVE to include MY interests, or I'm out.

That's the problem right now....... too many traditionally DEM groups have been left out for too long, and are't willing to be stepped on much longer.

The RW has won by dividing us, and we've let them. If we *EVER* really decide to work together FOR each other, nstead of only own interests, we'll be unstoppable.

It's up to us.

4. Well heck yeah
as liberals we might have different ideas about things (for the record, I'm a way out there, far left liberal.....I've heard it termed radical) but that's the great thing about being liberal, we can disagree.

I know your POV, I've seen you a lot on these boards and I know it is hard right now.....

19. Thanks....... it's become harder the last couple of days, and it's scary.
What I can't casually "disagree" on is the treatment of poor folk. Deaths in this country that go unnoticed will NEVER be acceptable to me.

14. Is it being 'divided' that allowed them to make such gains? We've allowed..
..the conservatives to pull the center to the right, that's where we've really been defeated. We've been pulled so far to the right that nixon looks like a liberal. They've done this partly by manipulating traditional democratic base by shifting the defination of 'interests' from economic ones to religious/cultural ones and by poisoning the american political vocabulary ala Newt Gingrich's word list.

Working together means recognizing and accepting liberalism as the successful and most fair set of guiding principles possible under capitalism. Our success will be in pulling the center back to something closer to New Deal liberalsim, IMHO. We don't pull back the center by working 'with' "pink tutu" dems that have happily sold out liberal ideals for outreach with the corporate party.

8. I want to add something here
I think the only true change we are going to see is going to come from the grassroots. From ordinary, every day Americans creating change, which will work its way UP.

Trickle down only works in physics, not public policy.

20. Perzackly! If I wasn't battling so much physical pain, I'd want to pull
together some awareness groups, and start building some community and action.

But, that's not something that one does by themselves. Are we really *able* to come together anymore? We're so invested in rugged individualism.

23. How about this sequin strapless tube dress transvestite from Transylvania?
I'm with you but what's the game plan?

I already got chewed a new asshole by my fellow DUs for threatening to vote Green after Edwards came out against gay marriage. They don't seem to understand that I don't like to eat shit without putting up a fight.

26. Please don't vote Green because your pissed at Edwards on Gay marriage!
Hi Teddybear :hi:

I really don't believe that they are "against" Gay Marriage...I believe that the misuse of this issue by Bu$h and the GOP to divide this nation in an election year was too hot of an issue for anyone wanting even a shot at the Oval Office to take a firm position behind Gay Marriage. I personally in my heart don't believe that they are opposed to it....Remember, a vote not given to Kerry/Edwards really is another 4 years of the sh*t for brains occupant of the oval office. Is that what you want? :scared:

25. I like the "Pink Tutu Democrat"
phrase, this has been my problem with the Dems for years. Too nice, too willing to concede and too willing to let the right walk all over them. And while I'm taking a break from voting Libertarian this year I'm still not wholly sold on Kerry. I'll vote for the guy but there are too many policies that he and I disagree on. Plus he's got that Skull and Bones thing. I am automatically suspicious of anyone who wants to belong to a "secret society". Ok, commence flaming me :D
