Ohio voter purge via Hamilton County continues: Ex-felons' voting rights misstated (August 4, 2004, summary) Reform advocates fault Hamilton County --Hamilton County elections officials are providing "misleading and erroneous" voting information to ex-felons, a Cincinnati-area prisoner advocacy group said Tuesday. The Prison Reform Advocacy Center found that one in five ex-felons don't realize they can re-register to vote, and some election boards were unaware of the law. "This is absolutely unacceptable that boards of elections that are supposed to know Ohio law ... are giving misleading, inconsistent and flat-out wrong information to ex-offenders," said David Singleton, executive director of the center. Singleton said the Advocacy Center is "particularly disturbed" by what was found in Hamilton County. Ex-felons who try to register to vote by mail in Hamilton County are required to attach a document from the state prison system or adult parole authority proving they are no longer in prison. Singleton said the requirement is unnecessary under Ohio law. http://www.enquirer.com/editions/2004/08/04/loc_exfelons04.html

CLG Exclusive: Ohio Voter Purge (July 16, 2004) by Steven Monroe "I noticed that one of the most critical counties in President Bush's re-(s)election efforts in Ohio, Hamilton County (Cincinnati), had a dramatic decrease in the voter rolls. It went from over 585,000 in 2000 to 519,048 today." http://www.legitgov.org/essay_monroe_ohio_voter_purge_071904.html

1. What a travesty
I wish there was something I could do. This should be front page news. Maybe we can send it to the major media?

5. Please forward the post to all who would be interested...
If enough people receive the information, it will be covered in the mainstream media. :)

Thanks,

2. Lori -- thanks for your great work. Two things:
First, for those who haven't followed CLG, go to the Web site -- they do consistently good work, covering many stories that haven't gotten their due in press coverage.

Next -- I know you've had two reports on this (at least). We were on the road for the first one, and at the time, were not having cell and Internet communications. Can you forward everything you've got on the Ohio felon situation (or links) to Bevharrismail@aol.com?

We'll be back in Ohio shortly. We have a board member who has been subject to much of the same kind of vote suppression tactics (he is African American, convicted of a felony (pot) 30 years ago; after decades as an upstanding citizen and highly regarded work with labor unions, he still finds his right to vote questioned.

I would like to schedule a time with this BBV board member and I to go make some visits about the felon issue in Ohio.

Also -- did you know -- Michael Shnayerson, of Vanity Fair, mentioned to me that the Florida felon purge was part of a nationwide strategy. I think we may find these problems in other states as well.

8. Here is one solution:
Citizens For Legitimate Government Launches B.Y.O.B., Bring Your Own "paper" Ballot, Campaign for "Election" 2004 --(press release from www.legitgov.org) --The group calls for voters in the 2004 presidential contest to print, fill-out, and notarize their own copy of the CLG paper ballot receipt, as a safeguard against the known flaws and vulnerabilities of touch-screen voting and the recent history of discarding votes and overthrowing election results.
