REUTERS: "Still, the openly skeptical laughter that greeted ..his answers"
Edited on Fri Aug-06-04 09:40 PM by wndycty
If that is not the funniest thing I have read in a long time nothing is.

-snip-
BUSH STRUGGLES TO ANSWER

Journalists attending the Unity conference in Washington had given Kerry loud applause when he appeared before them on Thursday, so Bush had little doubt about the group's political leanings when he agreed to talk to them.

Still, the openly skeptical laughter that greeted some of his answers to their questions was a stark contrast to the fawning crowds Bush usually faces on the campaign trail.
-snip-

Many in the crowd laughed when Bush struggled to answer a question about what tribal sovereignty means for Native American tribes in the 21st century.

"Tribal sovereignty means that; it's sovereign. I mean, you're a -- you've been given sovereignty, and you're viewed as a sovereign entity. And therefore the relationship between the federal government and tribes is one between sovereign entities," Bush replied.

1. I watched this on CSPAN
and, boy oh boy, Bush was on the hot seat, sweating like a schoolboy. Try to catch the weekend re-runs if you can. It's almost fun to watch Commander Codpiece squirm.

No wonder Rove keeps him on a short leash.

3. I watched this too - and I was embarrassed for him.
How could a guy that dumb and inarticulate be president? I used to think Reagan was dumb but he was a brain surgeon compared to this dolt. If he said doody, solemn doody once, he said it fifty times. His entire speech and Q & A session was repetitious and boring as well.

Haven't seen you in a while...so glad to see you still plugging away. Love your sig too. :hi:

I saw Bush on Oberman tonight and was aghast. Pity the poor people who will be around him this weekend to help him recover from such a major public embarrassment. You KNOW he's going to throw a pissy fit and his psychosis will only be more apparent to him. This brings him one step closer to the major breakdown many of us anticipate. We live in dangerous times.

10. Bush screwed up - didn't understand what the word "means" means
Edited on Fri Aug-06-04 09:50 PM by scottxyz
Bush failed to grasp that what he was being asked about was the ramifications (not the dictionary definition) of sovereignty.

He must have been proud that he was able to demonstrate that he knows what the SAT word "sovereignty" means.

Too bad he didn't grasp what the word "means" means in this context.

11. Ray Suarez asked
a question about affirmative action. As Bush started to answer, the audience applauded Suarez's question, and Bush turned to Suarez and sniped "they're not lettin' me answer" or something like that. Suarez seemed to give him a funny look (kind of hard to tell though in my media player).

64. The sadness of King George
The applause was meant for the person who was speaking. It was a bunch of young journalists who had strong feelings for their teachers on the panel. Whenever each one was given the opportunity to ask a question, each received vigorous applause. So consider the cold-heartedness of w*. He can not even allow a regular person, a role model for so many intelligent people, the opportunity to hear a bit of applause and gratitude.

He has no capacity to empathize.

5€ on it. YOUR ADVANTAGE. A "fellow" Texan (real one, no transplant, A&M Grad), reamed the *dauphin a butthole large enough into which his head would easily fit at the Unity Conference.

The only trick is, EVERYONE IS IN A SITUATION WHERE THINKING "ON YOUR FEET" IS THE STANDARD. (Sorta like 9/11 ) That is NOT gonna happen as the *dauphin proved HE CANNOT DO IT. HE'S INCOMPETENT. HE'S UNQUALIFIED. HE DID NOT ACHIEVE HIS POSITION THROUGH MERIT.

25. Same thing with his answer about "legacies". You could tell
he was perplexed about the word "legacy" for few seconds until he realized he WAS ONE! The question was something like, if he didn't believe in affirmative action, did he think schools should admit students as legacies or should it be solely on merit? He finally said they should be admitted on merit and not because they were legacies.

I thought the open laughter was a thing of beauty. And when they turned the camera on the audience a couple of times. My goodness, they were completely underwhelmed by W. The speech was a joke, I don't remember any applause AT ALL. And the Q and A was a disgrace. He answered none of the questions and his definition of "sovereignity" was an instant bonehead classic. You want a good Kerry campaign ad? Cut that hour or so of utter dreck into 30 second soundbites, and there you go. Kerry in a landslide.

embarrassed, and somewhat sickened by the experience. One woman was holding her head like I do when I have a migraine.

The chimp looked like the most unfunny, desperate Vegas lounge act comedian of all time on the worst night of his career. Facing an openly hostile crowd, he broke into a flop sweat and tried every sound bite in his limited arsenal to generate some sort of remotely favorable response.

As a comic scene in a movie, it would have been hysterical. As an actual event, it was pathetic and almost surreal.

After his big prime time press conference in April (I think), where he had trouble with his prepared responses and didn't apologize or admit to any mistakes, I told my wife (who had lived in America for only 5 years) that for the first time in my life, I am embarrassed to be an American.

91. excellent point!
you're right

twelve year old girls are usually MUCH more mature, grounded, self-reliant, responsible, etc. than 12 yr old boys

read the literature

AND, I have years' and years' and years' experience in junior high schools

sure, there are exceptions, but I see it EVERY day

if we had to have a 12 year old president, it would be a girl

and there are MANY 12 year old girls in MY school who would NOT have SAT there drooling for seven minutes if they'd heard that the nation was under attack

54. Bush* should stick with his 'fawning', hand-picked audiences...
...because he's out of his element when he speaks in front of people who don't have to take an oath of loyalty to be there.

55. I was thinking the same thing this morning . . .
. . .as I read an article talking about Kerry and Edwards being heckled.

57. From the San Francisco Chronicle
-snip-
The scattered and infrequent applause during Bush's remarks was in sharp contrast to the enthusiastic reception the roughly 5,000 minority journalists gave Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry, whose speech the day before was interrupted nearly 50 times by clapping and ended with a standing ovation.

Bush, more accustomed to friendly crowds on the campaign trail, received a cool response and moments of awkward laughter from the crowd at Unity, a consortium of African American, Latino, Asian American and American Indian journalist associations.

58. And Jesse chimes in
-snip-
During his address, which was attended by civil rights leader and past presidential candidate Rev. Jesse Jackson, there were a few goofs - or Bushisms - for which he has become known for.

The most laughter came from the more than 3,000 scribes as Bush did not seem to know what tribal sovereignty meant when asked by a panelist. Bush referred to the plight of Native Americans, who are apposed to states interfering with their lives, as "tribal sovereign-entity."

"The president explained you just didn't understand it," said Jackson, who joked about the speech at a news conference.

61. I like his statement when he was talking about the tax breaks.
"We paid special attention to parents with children." Well, that makes a whole lot of sense (NOT). They wouldn't be parents if they didn't have children.

68. It would have been great if...
... someone would have asked him how he can be against affirmative action when he himself was allowed to go to Yale on a legacy scholarship.

He didn't have the grades, or the SAT scores to get in but he managed to steal someone else's spot because of who he is.

71. Didn't you see it? That's EXACTLY what he was asked
By Roland Martin, who got him to say that he would oppose legacy admissions. Bush was defenseless. He could come up with no other answer. LOL!

... but that is great. Does anyone have a transcript? I'm sure you don't get the full effect by just reading it though. I would have to hear the chimp stammer.

Here's the link:

For a quickie eyeball popper, go to 32:00 and watch the warm-up pitch, then go to 52:00 to see the SLAM DUNK.

But you REALLY MUST watch the entire travesty... check out the FACES in the audience and the ABSURD babbling excuse for an answer Ray Suarez gets... :eyes:

my dad didn't help me. I had to knock on a lot of doors.

erm?
is that the way most people get accepted? knocking on doors of people who are most likely very influenced by Poppy?

69. His tone is so pedantic it's offensive
He is so condescending, talking to that hyper-informed audience the same way he does to the ignorant right-wing knee-jerk republican Stepfordians he usually meets in his pre-screened appearances. Here he speaks to these JOURNALISTS as if they are a roomful of twelve-year-olds and it is just offensive and embarrassing. No wonder they couldn't restrain their laughter.

73. His shortest answer was a doozy.
When asked about the payroll tax he said something like "cutting the payroll tax would wreck Social Security".

I nearly fell off my chair.
