Ok, I'm tired of the Republican usurpation of masculinity. The rhetoric seems to go that if you're a liberal male you're a weak pacifist bookworm who wouldn't back up their buddies in a fight. Thus the GOP steals away the blue collar working class voter who, no matter what, knows that he needs to watch his friend's backs. SO here is what I propose: us liberal guys need to start boxing clubs. Go get a bunch of your buddies, sign up at a gym, learn how to beat the snot out of one another, and the next time some republican tries to insult your manhood tell em you'll box them. Give them the address of the gym, tell them you'll front the gear, and then fight. Even if you lose, they gotta respect the reaction and it will show we've not lost our agro impulses.
I would like to further assert to all my gay brothers out there, that this is not meant to be a hetero only endeavor. We know only too well how the often ugly male impulse toward violence is cultivated in American culture via homophobic suggestion and innuendo, doubly serving to oppress and ostracize. That's no reason to not kick a little ass and postively channel the vibe.
Finally, to those women who may read this: I know that most gender role assertions are dangerous cultural constructs. However the practical reality of growing up as a man in this society is the clear message that "weakness is bad". Denying the power of the construct doesn't destroy it, and if you tell me I'm perpetuating the problem (shrug) so be it. You should box too, preferably Ann Coulter.
In conclusion I am not advocating violence. Merely taking steps to strangle this propaganda about being liberal is "unmanly". For in co-opting it the conservatives suggest that the masculine is all the worst aspects of americana: greed, blind power grabbing, callous indifference, and thug life imperialism.
There's nothing wrong with protecting people, or sniveling about showing restraint. We liberal men are strong protective punk mo-fos who are equally capable of throwing down. So Mr. Lars Larsen if you want a piece of me I'm right here, three rounds, and the DU Admin has my permission to give you my email address.
