Jerry Falwell says he has had it with "left-wing thugs."
The Christian right leader said he is tired of being accused by civil liberties groups of abusing his ministry's tax-exempt status just because he has a few things to say about the direction of the country.

So this year, he's fighting back. Falwell told the Associated Press he intends to organize a conference in September to explain to conservative preachers what they can and cannot say about the nation's politics, without threatening their tax-exempt status. Churches that enjoy such tax breaks must abide by certain restrictions on their political activities and advocacy.

"Because this is an election year and because of the controversy over the right of churches to be involved in moral and social issues, we will have constitutional attorneys there to explain to pastors what they may and may not do," Falwell told the AP. "We're going to be careful not to break the law, but we are also going to be careful not to be intimidated by left-wing thugs, not to let them intimidate evangelical pastors into silence."

Don't expect Barry Lynn to attend. The executive director of Americans United for Separation of Church and State -- a group that complained last month that Falwell was promoting President Bush's candidacy -- issued a statement mocking the proposed conference. Noting that Falwell's "Old Time Gospel Hour" was fined in the 1980s for its political activities, Lynn said: "The scriptures say, if the blind lead the blind, they both will fall into the ditch. Or in this case, into the hands of the IRS."

2. Hes had it, Huh?
Sounds like old Jerry is getting butch. How about a cage match with him and Larry Flynt? If Larry can scoot around on his ass fast enough to catch Jerry, I bet Flynt would whip his pious ass.

16. LOL if it weren't so tragic for our country. Bush LOVES Moon.
With Moon's money and influence, and Falwell and Pat Robertson's TV Pass The Loot club, the Reich wing has a couple of fine cash cows. The only thing that trumps money and power is TRUTH. Let's give them the what's for!

Check out what Robert Parry wrote about their affaire secrete.

Bartcop's got the BFEE-Moon number down:

Once the Fundies and Freepers discover what Rev Moon has meant to the BFEE, it's pitchfork-time! Yeeargh!

7. Falwell
isn't he the ass who fretted cuz he thought one of the teletubbies was gay? What I can't figure out is why he choose the tubby with the purse and not the one with the giant fallic symbol sticking out of the top of his head. And why does he watch the teletubbies? I think a godfearing repub would wonder if he wasn't a child molester. In all seriousness, he really creeps me out. He is one tootie frootie nut! I wonder if god is threatened by a teletubby carrying a purse?

10. jerry fallwell is a fraud and a thief.
Edited on Fri Aug-06-04 12:18 AM by DenverDem
My gullible aunt bought tens of thousands of dollars of bonds issued by liberty university and on which fallwell cynically defaulted. A class action lawsuit has been dragging on but no body expects any financial justice. Meanwhile, the uncredited "school" is recruiting a fall class of morans. fallwell is an absurd fraud and for him to have any credibility is beyond belief, not to mention the fact that he should be in prison.

But it just goes to show you that there is no way to overestimate the self destructive ignorance of fundigelicals and jingoists.

The guy has to "organize a conference"??? How big a bureaucracy does he overlord in the first place that he can't just have a conference but organize one?

And who exactly are these "left wing thugs" and why does he (implicitly) separate them from those who might keep tabs on they "being careful not to break the law"?

Republiggons I swear have all the bases covered, no wonder they hate "trial lawyers"!!!

17. Count me in as one Christian
who hates Irreverend Falwell and doesn't feel guilty for it. I remember seeing his Old Time Gospel Hour in the 70s, and at collection time he'd demand a cheque for a C-note from everyone. (Over $300 today!) And then I'd think of the story about the widow's mite, the woman who gave the two pennies that were all she had, causing Jesus to say that she gave more than the rich SOBs did.

Ever since then I've pretty much considered him to be much, much more of a bad influence than Tinky Winky.

If he were a Teletubby, he'd be blood-red with horns. Still pointing the finger at TW, no doubt.

:grr:

18. I had a discussion this morning
with someone over breakfast, and they brought up a very similar case involving a Baptist Church in Springdale, AR. I said, "Well, let them start paying taxes on their income just like I do, then they'll have the same right to support their candidates as I do."
