Some thoughts on PNAC and U.S. policy in the Middle East
I have been reading the PNAC manifesto for quite sometime now and want to share with DU people some concusions I have come to:

There are two basic tenets of the PNAC document that are currently driving Bush's policies;there are many more but these two are taking precedence now.

The first is the idea that because of the collapse of the Soviet Union the US has an unprecedented historic opportunity to become the global hegemon well into the twentyfirst century. It can impose its will wherever and whenever it chooses to do so.

This global hegemony would require not merely that the US gain control of world' oil supplies but deny it to any nation that opposes the US or is a potential rival.(i.e China). Thus the need to invade a weak oil rich country like Iraq. This sends the message to other oil rich nations like Saudi Arabia,Kuwait, the Emirates, the Caspian Basin countries that unless they become vassal states their oil fields will be seized and put to use by the US for its own or its allies' benefit.
At present, Saudi Arabia,Kuwait and Egypt have been brought under control because they are essentially ruled by US puppets.Iraq is expected to reach that same state under Allawi's rule.Any rebellion such as the one being carried out by Iraqis will be harshly put down by American troops with the "approval" of the Iraqi strongman.

Along the Caspian basin a similar situation may also be unfolding what with Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan,Turkmenistan and, of course, Iran being predominantly Muslim, resistance to American rule is going to take shape soon.

One of the great side stories of this PNAC is the unwritten story about the convergence of US and Israeli interests. The stamp of "terrorism" that has been put on the Palestinian Resistance movement has now been effectively transplanted to the US Mainland via the 9/11 event. With this transformation now the entire Muslim/Arab world has been tainted with the broad brush of Terrorism. This has given license for the Bush Administration to declare open season on Muslims/Arabs anywhere in the world. It has also brought popular opinion to condone violations of well accepted norms of international laws by the US, especially the treatment of prisoners as at Abu Ghraib.

Another important part of the PNAC program is to strengthen Israel's position in the Middle East vis-a-vis its Arab neighbors.Beginning with the Second Intifada, many Israelis and their US supporters have realized that in a sea of Arabs, the enmity to Israel is well entrenched and not likely to fade any time soon.So the pretense of the Two State solution was abandoned and unremitting war against all Arabs/Muslims has been adopted on the Israeli side. This has brought them face to face with the demographic problem of increasing birth rates among the Arabs and decreasing birth rates among the Israelis.
Unless a solution was found even a one state solution will not be an option over the next two decades.

This is where another solution proposed by no less than Wolfowitz and Kristol in the PNAC document makes ominous reading. They propose the adoption of gene warfare with viruses designed to attack specific genotypes(i.e Arabs only).Their current logic is to claim it will allow them to "manage and control 'unruly' populations".As time passes,I am sure it will be extended to other more obvious uses.

Any one who reads all this knows how far from our basic American ideals we have strayed,as Senator Byrd keeps reminding us at every opportunity. The belief in violence, making war for resources, torturing innocent civilians, lying to mainatin one's power are nothing short of subversion of American ideals.

Unless we turn back from this, all our lectures about Freedom and Democracy will ring hollow as many of my European and Asian friend keep reminding me.

1. Ye gods, did they really publicly advocate gene warfare?!
I hadn't heard that part. Could you point me to the relevant passage? It doesn't surprise me at all that they think that way, but to say it publicly? I'm amazed that they're not pelted with rotten tomatoes whenever they show their faces in public.

3. I will post the link for you later today. It is part of the PNAC
document. You can get it at WWW.NewAmerican Century.Com.There are little nuggets like this strewn all over the document that need careful reading. The need for a New Pearl Harbor like event falls under this category and so does the need to make America feared, not loved by the Arabs.

2. Hi Veggie, Thanks For The Analysis
One question, is the use of directed gene weapons talked about in the PNAC documents directly or is this found in another source document(s).

Thanks

7. Once again, Science is not to be blamed for our ills;
It is our own weaknesses as human beings that are at the root of our problems as our Founding Fathers recognized even in much simpler days.
Race, religion, nationality and a myriad other reasons are invoked to set man against man.The unlimited potential of science to cure diseases, produce plenty and, yes, solve the Energy problems without recourse to fossil fuels is lost in the mad rush to see another person as an enemy instead of a potential friend or someone in need that needs our help. How else can we explain the tortures at Abu Ghraib,or even better, the tacit acquiescence of Americans toward this barbarism?
