What I don't like is how the rising tide of conservatism in national politics is trying to redefine Christianity and claim it as an ally. Suddenly, being a follower of Christ has greater meaning than loving your fellow man, turning the other cheek and caring for the less fortunate.
more . . .
As a result, an alarming stereotype is emerging. We churchgoers are being perceived as patriotic citizens who love America (that part I like and totally agree with). But from there, the image goes berserk.
I fear that we are seen as George W. Bush voters - that we believe as Bush believes, that he is blessed with divine intervention and was even chosen by God to serve, that we support the war in Iraq as just and necessary, and that we see homosexuals as sinners with no chance of entering heaven.
That image grows even darker when you hear far-right TV evangelists cheerleading the Iraqi war as an action that "will bring the love of Jesus Christ to those misguided souls." Never mind that Christ's love is coming via bullets and bombs and that "those misguided souls" already have a religion (Islam) that is the fastest growing on Earth and nearly as old as Christianity.

Your thoughts? Not being Christian, I found this reassuring. I'm curious if most Christians really identify with Bush, cuz Bush & cronnies don't seem that Christian to me!
