Effective respose to freeper attacks on patriotism
In a thread calling into question the patriotism of Democrats, I had the following exchange which killed the thread dead:
freeper: But you do agree that if not for democrats there would be an amendment banning (flag burning), yes?

shockingelk: I believe it's more germane to the conversation that were it not for your hero Anton Scalia, the Flag Protection Act of 1989 (which banned burning of the Flag, was passed by a Democratic Congress, and which a Republican President refused to sign in the required time - thus becoming law) would not have been ruled unconstitutional by the Supreme Court.

Roll that up in your flag and smoke it!

Bumped the tread back up with "Blaming America first is what überpatriot right wingers call it when others accept accountability which they themselves attempt to evade."

Still no additional replies. Burn, freepers, burn!

4. Well it should have been ruled unconstitutional

Nobody likes to see our flag burned (almost nobody), but our Bill or Rights protects those "almost nobodys."

I must say I'm a bit surprised at Scalia on that one, but he also voted against the BUsh position on denying due process rights to American citizens.

8. The important thing is ...
It makes freepers heads explode.

Maybe it does some good as well ... when they're called on the carpet like that, some of them might wonder if all their hate is worth it, considering their heart condition.

5. yeah at the convention we
proved that we can wave the flag with the best of them. But you know what? This is ridiculous. Why should we be waving the flag like a bunch of mindless repugs?

People should be aware that that flag is a symbol of repression, and suffering, and EVIL to a lot of people. There are people in this country whose ancestors were dragged here in chains. People who suffered in slavery under that flag. Do you think that these people are inspired by all that rah rah wave the flag garbage?

It was a ploy by Kerry to win over some moderates--but if he continues in this tone for very long he will lose some of his core constituency.

9. Quick lesson in US History
1968 McGovern ran on the peace ticket and a buch of scared people voted Nixon in.

After that the National Security Issue was claimed by Repugs

During the Convention you had a bunch of Flag and General Officers on the stage... guess what it was more than just wraping yourself in the flag, but proving that we are good for national security

I know some do not see this, but if we are to take the WH and hopefully one, if not both Houses... we need to take every issue away from Repukes, INCLUDING National Security

Oh and as a wife of a USN Chief (Ret) whose patriotism is questioned because I questioned the President while my husband deployed into harms way, taking that flag back IS important.

10. Ummm... I believe it was Eugene McCarthy in 1968 on the peace ticket
and McGovern was in '72. McCarthy didn't get the nomination as Hubert Humphrey got it after Bobby Kennedy was assasinated. Humphrey lost to Nixon in '68.

11. It's the only flag we have
Fetishizing it is .... unhealthy, but as it represents our nation's ideals, if you're proud of our ideals, you by extension should be proud of our flag.

Keep in mind that extreme right winger do not represent our ideals, nor does the Bush administration, nor did the institution of slavery, nor does the act of amending the constitution to limit freedoms. Don't give those people our flag!

7. Sweet!
Thanks for posting this. I had hate radio on the other day and Newt was talking about how Kerry "wrapped himself up in the flag" during his acceptance speech, but had voted against an ammendment protecting the flag.
