...Went to dinner with a friend the other night. In the midst of a conversation on cycling (I used to be a fairly avid biker who was not only fervent about the off-road stuff, but also commuted by bike). I told my buddy that I always considered gloves to be more important than my helmet. I told him that while I had taken many spills in my life, I had never hit my head, but my hands took some abuse and contact everytime. Gloves had not only saved me from carpal tunnel, but had preserved my short-term dexterity as well. Every real biker I ever knew would reiterate the point.

He emailed me today to say he saw a piece in today's New York Times about both candidates and their stated fondness for cycling. He said there were pictures in which, indeed, Kerry was wearing gloves. Dubya, however, was bare-handed.

I wonder if Shrub even knows how to use gears properly?

In response to your gloves are more important than helmut statements, though, I'd have to disagree. While gloves may protect you from scrapes and carpal tunnel, and may have prevented injury on numerous occassions, it only takes one head injury to really F you up with or without loss of consciousness.
