The news is awash with voting "irregularities".
What if we made September RE-registration month. It's well before the 30 day "deadline" that lots of states have, and it would remind people who have not voted "in a while", to check their status.
It's not that hard to make a quick trip to (or call..if that's allowed) the registrars' office.
I don't think it's illegal to ask the counter person to provide you with "proof" that you are registered..(most places have photo copiers)..
If they give you tangible, written , or photocopied proof, just fold that baby up and put it in your wallet/purse..
If it turns out that you are NOT registered, ...well you can do it right there and then...
Finding out that you are not registered...in September...is not that big of a problem.....Finding out on election day, IS...
Ask your high-school-senior kids if they and their friends are registered (must be 18 by election day)...Offer to take them with you ..:)
If you or your friends know of people who were "dropped" or if motor-voter has failed to register them, CALL YOUR NEWSPAPER.. Insist that they do an article about voting "problems" in your paper..
If it's not too late to suggest polling places, ask to have nursing homes added as polling places.. That would solve a problem for some of the older folks who have a hard time getting to the polls, and they could use the visitors :)
