Are the DNC or the DLC supporting the Texas Democrats??
Edited on Wed Aug-20-03 03:25 PM by madfloridian
They are fighting for all of us. Have either of these groups come out in support of or speaking out for the TX Democrats who have put their lives on hold?

I just donated to MoveOn, as they seem to be planning a nation wide ad.

I know there was a rally in support of them in TX last week, and I saw the great pics.

Are they getting support from anyone else? Are they getting the support of the national parties?

I hope so.

1. Or does anybody know?
Thud! Another ones drops quickly. I have not heard either group support them. I really had a sincere question.

If I had added the something about sex or bashed a candidate, it probably wouldn't have dropped so fast.

There has no publicity nationwide, does it get much in TX?

12. Some good punches thrown last night on Daily show about them
They were portrayed as run-aways that need comfort and support. It was quite humorous and still got the point across. Especially when they showed the map of Texas with it in Blue and Red before redistricting and all red after redristricting. Also showed Delay as the moving force behind the plan. It was a really great skit.

4. I'm glad you asked!
I made a post amazingly similar to this one I'm making now in another thread...
Ya see, I sent an e-mail to the communications director of Texas Democrats that read like this...
Hello,Sean!
I asked this question of a good friend here at the Abilene Reporter News and he referred me to you. I’d like to know if there is a website set up yet for online donations directed to ameliorate the substantial personal financial burden the Texas Eleven have shouldered on our behalf. I already contribute to the Democratic party, but I’d like to make a directed donation to help cover their expenses, if possible.
To tell you the truth I think if you set the site up and we pay their bills for them on this, it’d make a pretty powerful statement to the other side.

Thanks!

I received this reply the next day...

Rick,

I don’t know of any fund for the Texas 11 devoted solely to personal expenses, but the Texas Democratic Party is accepting contributions earmarked for the Texas 11 that are being used to assist with their stay in Albuquerque.
You can either donate via our website at www.txdemocrats.org or call our fundraising department at 512-478-9800. You will want to ask for Evan.
Thanks for your email and keep up the good work in the Big Country!

I gotta tell ya, I think a targeted web campaign to raise funds for the fines and other expenses would be more effective as a fundraiser, and much more visible. Plus if we got the Texas 11 through this financially unscathed it'd be a huge slap in the face of the repukes who wasted no time voting for $1,000/day fines for these guys. I don't know if it'd run afoul of campaign finance laws...the repukes already cried foul on that basis over the donated plane ride to Albe...Alba...ah hell, New Mexico. But jeez....what a coup it'd be if the "man on the street" footed the bill for this fight...don't ya think so?

Rick

6. Thanks. I did not see a way to specify for the TX 11.
I donated, but I did not see a way to make it known that it what I wanted it used for. They should specify. Glad you wrote them.

I've been trying, unsuccessfully, to find out how to make a directed donation to the Texas 11. Thanks for the info.

From an email:

A letter below from State Senator Rodney Ellis explains the situation. Please read it, and then please help us launch a hard-hitting ad campaign to fight back in Texas. Whether you donate $5 or $5,000, you will be helping to hold accountable reckless Republicans who think they can get away with anything. Please contribute to this effort now.

August 18, 2003

Dear friends,

I am writing to you from a hotel room in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where I and 10 of my colleagues in the Texas Senate have been forced to reside for the past 20 days. If we return to our homes, families, friends, and constituents, the Governor of Texas will have us arrested.

I know, it sounds more like a banana republic than the dignified democracy on which we have long prided ourselves. We are effectively exiled from the state due to our unalterable opposition to a Republican effort -- pushed by Tom DeLay and Karl Rove, and led by Texas Governor Rick Perry -- that would rewrite the map of Texas Congressional districts in order to elect at least 5 more Republicans to Congress.

You may not have heard much about the current breakdown in Texas politics. The Republican power play in California has obscured the Republican power play in Texas that has forced my colleagues and me to leave the state.

Recognizing that public pressure is the only thing that can break the current stalemate, our friends at the Democratic National Committee and MoveOn.org PAC have offered to support our efforts by sharing this email with you.

The Republican redistricting effort shatters the tradition of performing redistricting only once a decade immediately after the Census -- making redistricting a perpetual partisan process. It elevates partisan politics above minority voting rights, in contravention of the federal Voting Rights Act. It intends to decimate the Democratic Party in Texas, and lock in a Republican majority in the U.S. House of Representatives. And Republican efforts to force a vote on this issue by changing the rules of legislative procedure threaten to undermine the rule of law in Texas.

We do not take lightly our decision to leave the state. It was the only means left to us under the rules of procedure in Texas to block this injustice. We are fighting for our principles and beliefs, and we can win this fight with your support.

Sincerely,

Rodney Ellis
Texas State Senator (Houston)

Please contribute to this effort now:

Hey if you guys come into a crunch and don't trust other sources.... I could get in touch with Leticia's husband Pete (he's my Dad's cousin). I know with the growing paranoia going around here.. how would you trust me??? If you think of a safe trustful way, let me know.

Maybe a PayPal account????

Thank you for inquiring about Texas 11 contributions.

I’m sorry to say that contributions made though our website are handled as a joint fundraiser by a third party, therefore any contributions made online cannot go directly to the Texas 11.

To make a direct contribution to the Texas 11 you can:

1) Call us at (512) 478-9800 with your credit card information and let us know your contribution is in support of the Texas 11 or

2) Mail a check made out to the Texas Senate Democratic Caucus to PO BOX 13443, Austin, TX 78711

Thank you for your support!
