CA Recall--Appearing on TV this am..need advice
I usually appear as a financial commentator. Now I'm appearing for the anti-recall campaign, as a financial talking head , commenting on the HUGE interest we will be forced to pay if the recall passes. ( see page 1 of DU today)

Should I dress like the banker guy? (tie?
Dean casual? (tie, rolled up shirt sleeves)
California Casual? ( polo shirt or other short sleeve)
California Bus meeting? Hawaiian shirt /slacks

That's summer business attire for out of office meetings in So Cal...slacks and expensive hawaiian sirt. But If it goes national, it might look cliche...

any advice DUers?
(sarcasm always appreciated but please indicate so)

2. If your commentary is about money, go for the banker guy look
Just my opinion. Personally I detest guys in suits and ties, but most people seem to attribute some credibility to them.

3. Why would you possibly
"detest" someone for the clothes they wear?

5. Personal prejudice based on personal life experience
Edited on Wed Aug-20-03 11:38 AM by slackmaster
I grew up in La Jolla, California.

Almost without exception, the people in the most expensive suits, driving the most expensive cars, and flashing the most expensive jewelry were the biggest crooks.

If you're interested in well-dressed crooks of La Jolla and San Diego try Web searches on the following names:

Alan Glick
J. David "Jerry" Dominelli
C. Arnholt Smith
Clark Higgins
Gordon Luce

I could name a few more but thinking about them gets my blood pressure up.

7. Just amazed
that a so-called "liberal" would resort to such blatant sterotyping based on nothing but one's manner of dress. I suppose you "detest" Bill Clinton, Al Gore, Bob Kerry, etc.?

6. Dean Casual, we here in california are tired of listing to the banker guys

at least aim. Since your appearing for the anti-recall campaign. I always bring up the hypocrisy of the recall; the people who want to replace Davis give the reason High deficits and high unemployment. They want to recall Davis for what Bush is doing national, and yet they still support Bush (partition hypocrisy)

And why a shot gun wedding election with no debates and merit? Arnold refuses to answer a direct question relying sole on double talk (according to Jesse Ventura) and blockbuster movie slogans. This should not be a popularity contest, and with the recall costing us an estimated 35 million lets at least move back the recall to actually learn where the candidates stand on the issues. I’m sure you already know this.

Good look!

8. I vote for dressing as professional as you can stand.
And if you're so inclined for some talking points advice;

I found the article about the potential for a Davis replacement to "reshuffle" the entire political stucture of CA by replacing appointments to be quite unsettling. boards and Commissions and Etc. throughout the state could be thrown into chaos if the "winner" chose to replace the 500 (or more?) persons appointed and currently serving. MAKE IT A LOCAL problem and people will listen. The university system is dealing with cuts and raising tuition, now imagine if ahnold, or billy simon get in there. They will DEFINATELY start hacking away at those "liberal" appointees. Although, I suspect the first ones to go would be the appointees on the Ca Coastal Commission, with someone more, shall we say, Energy Industry Sensitive.

Unless you want statewide chaos, vote NO on the recall.

My choice;
No on Recall
Yes on Bustamente (but I plan on waiting to vote late and if Cruz is cruising, I will vote for Larry Flynt out of protest, and because he would kick ass!)

9. Banker look since it's about the financial impact
That'll be more a credible and less "the sky is falling" look.

10. Dress like Arnonld--suit/sport coat with shirt unbuttoned, no tie
or wear whatever Arnold is wearing today. CA'ians need to see a guy who looks like Arnold disagree with Arnold.

The two big things I'd do are

(1) counter the depiction of Arnold as a moderate. Refer to his meeting with Ken Lay, and wonder about who his appointments might be. He doesn't have a political machine, so he will certainly have to rely on some of the same Republicans who got CA into the energy and financial mess in the first place,

(2) make the recall sound serious -- make it sound like there's a lot at stake. Republicans benefit if it sounds like a circus.

Maybe talk about how well managed the state pension fund has been since it has been run by all democrats. Note that pension funds in CT, OH, and FL run by republicans were all used to buy Enron stock on the way down. The CA pensions are huge, and have a lot of influence on the markets, and they would be a gold mind for any Republicans trying to use them to prop up the prices of stock sold by their insider buddies.

16. Here's how Arnold is dressing in his commercial...
http://www.latimes.com/news/politics/la-arnold-ad.htmlstory

Dark blue suit. White button down. No tie.

Dress like that and viewers are going to think, wait, here's a guy who dresses like Arnold, but doesn't agree with Arnold. I'm going to have to think twice about what Arnold is saying.

14. Go California Casual
And bring the dog for additional effect (sarcasm off). Well, How about a quiet sports coat, natural fiber tie, etc. Just lose the power tie for something a little more pleasant, think snappy professor. Good luck.
