Bumper stickers in a bi-partisan family
I have a question for you all and would love to hear your opinions.

I'm a democrat, my husband a republican. We each drive a car. Neither one of us are really bumper sticker people, but this year I'd really like to get a Kerry/Edwards sticker. I live in an area that typically votes republican and I'd like to show my support.

I mentioned this to my husband and added that he if he wanted to get a Bush/Cheney sticker for HIS car, that would be fine by me, although I wouldn't want to drive in it. :-) He rolled his eyes and said he doesn't like stickers and that we'd have to take separate cars anywhere we go until after the election. :D

So do I get the sticker and embarrass him and drive separately until November? Or do I skip it?

Please don't suggest divorce. Too expensive. :-)

1. There are bumper sticker holders that are magnetic which you
Edited on Wed Jul-21-04 03:15 PM by k in IA
can put on and take off your car when you want too. That might work out.

3. Would they be easy to steal?
I've heard of those but wonder if someone could come along and tear if off easily.

The plan was to tape to the inside of the window.

23. Some people get the magnets so they can take them off when they
are parked someplace public because they are afraid someone might vandalize their cars.

2. Get magnetic stickers.
Keep each on your own cars, and put 'em both on your respective sides of one car when you go out together. Voila!

5. the magnetic pads for your stickers suggested by K in IA are a great
idea.

I have another question, though. How does a Democrat stay happily married to a Bush supporter? I guess not talking about politics would help, but that would be just too hard for me.

I just don't understand how anyone could support Bush after all what he has done to this country and the world. Did he see Fahrenheit 9/11?

8. Politics aren't a major part of our lives
During election years we bicker a bit, but for the most part it's good natured and done with a smile. It also helps that he's extremely diplomatic. He has also softened on some issues over the years and really isn't as conservative as he'd like to think.

Neither of us have seen 9/11...he has no interest and I'm a tight wad. We almost never go to movies. I'm tempted to buy the DVD when it comes out, though.

12. Sounds like he is ripe for conversion. . .show him that deficit chart
that I keep seeing around DU. You know, the one that shows how insanely bad the deficit has become under our "conservative" admin.

I know most Republicans are embarrassed to show support for someone dumber than themselves.

6. What I've done
Is gone to a sign shop that makes magnetic signs to go on cars and trucks and had them cut me up a square foot of the blank magnetic material into bumper sticker sized pieces. I then put the bumper sticker on the magnet and the magnet on my car. I did this because I live in Oklahoma, and I don't trust any freepers around here to not vandalize my car when it's parked so I can just pop the trunk and take the sticker off when I park.

10. Well I think it'd be too much of hassle
especially for something as trivial as a bumper sticker. You could always show your support in other ways, maybe by wearing a T shirt or a button, that wouldn't impose on your husband.

11. Bi-Partisan Bumper Stickers
I've got just the thing for you - a Bush sticker that you would like:
"Thanks for Not Paying Attention ~ Bush / Cheney '04"

You could offer it to your husband as a compromise ;-). By the way, how smart is he? And how's his sense of humor? It would be good if the whole country could lighten up about this whole thing. It sounds like you guys are an example of how to respectfully disagree.

ps ~ get a friend to vote for Kerry to offset your husband's vote.

15. I Recently Saw A Car With BOTH!
On the left side of the bumper was a Kerry/Edwards sticker with the green NO WAR sticker beside it. On the right half was a bush/Cheney sticker and an American flag! Painted firmly down the dead middle was a red line, obviously done by hand.

One of the funniest things I've ever seen!

20. I vote for you putting a Kerry sticker on your car!
My husband and I have them on all our vehicles and I drove to Houston this weekend to see my mother, a very staunch Republican. We rode in my truck and she knew the sticker was there and never said a word. If SHE can do it, ANYONE can! :) If your husband won't ride with you, that's his choice!

21. Plastic window signs.
Magnets are a good option, but you could also try the clear, clingy plastic signs on your rear window. You don't have to put stickers on your car or worry that someone will steal your magnet.

I think you should get the bumper sticker, sister! ;) Show your support for your party no matter what your hubby says. WE know who the real guy for this job is. If you go to johnkerry.com, they'll send you a free Kerry/Edwards sticker.

26. Right / Left yard signs
First, put your Kerry sticker on your car.

I have the same situation as you do. I always get a DEM yard sign. My husband removes it, I'd put it back. During the last Presidential race I went to local GOP headquarters and bought him a Bush sign. My Gore sign was on the left side of the yard and his Bush sign was on the right. We got a lot of laughs from neighbors - who by the way are all Republicans.

27. What I want to know is HOW you got involved with him in the first place.
When I got married to my wife, I asked her two questions, letting her know FIRST that they both were "deal breakers":

My Question #1:
1. Who do you think is the best President we've had since Eisenhower (more than one right answer)?

Her answer: "Bill Clinton, with Jimmy Carter a close second. Wait a minute: you aren't some stinking REPUBLICAN, are you?!?!"

My Question #2 (a two-parter)

2a. Do you support the Death Penalty?

Her answer:

"Only for Republicans."

2b. What is your opinion on Women's Choice?

"No restricitons.
"How'd I do? On the other hand, what are YOUR answers to the SAME QUESTIONS, BUDDY???"

I got on my knees and begged her to marry me on the spot.
