Poll question: Which republican would you vote for?
Edited on Tue Aug-19-03 09:32 PM by camcb
You don't have a choice of any Democrat, Vote for the Republican President or former President to lead this nation.

(starting from 1900)

9. TR--a war monger, no doubt, but he had some redeeming qualities
like real character and a progressive domestic agenda. And he was bright, courageous, full of life. Without a doubt, TR--in fact, he's the one Repuke I might vote for even against a Dem.

Some tried to take away his name from Boulder (Hoover) Dam. Was reinstated during FDR's term(s), I believe.

Just out of his league as pretzledent. Very intelligent man and engineer, I've read.

I'd go with TR, too.

Hunted him down and gave him a job overseeing food distribution in post-war Europe.

When HST offered him the job, Hoover broke down in tears. Turns out it was the first time in almost two decades that anyone even paid him any attention.

Hoover went on to redeem himself, and remained very good friends with HST until his death in 1964.

And with that... my 100th post! WHOO HOO!!!! :D

As part of the agreement with Satan for allowing Nixon to re-enter the mortal realm everything he does would be forced into the public limelight. It would be the complete opposite of a shadow government. Perhaps as part of his damnation Nixon would be forced by Satan to pass liberal legistlation?

What about all the votes for Eik?

A great guy...but are we forgetting that he opposed Medicare, worked to weaken Unions in this country, and also picked Nixon as his running mate? Even worse, he did little to halt the frightening growth of the military industrial complex that he so boldly warned us of. And yet he was the ideal political leader who was best positioned to change our nation's shortsighted approach during the Cold War.

It was presented by Caroline Kennedy. And Ted Kennedy said at the dedication that he was wrong to oppose Ford's pardon of Nixon at the time.

Ford was pro choice, pro ERA , pro affirmative action. He'd be called a RINO today for sure.

He gets my props.

Ford probably would've been it had he not pardoned Nixon, although he would be very moderate today and preferable to the current squatter in the White House or likes of Tom DeLay (actually even Nixon was pretty moderate compared to the current nutjobs in charge of the GOP)

I have never voted for a Republican nor would I ever. That’s why in the 2000 election when I seen my own people in my own party not even fight the stealing of and election, I had no choice but to leave the democrats.

And even after they stole it the democrats voted as a group with no opposition to vote for every one of the pResidents laws.

37. Ike
for warning us about the the Military Industrial Complex, and for speaking the truth in general.

From everything I've read, Ike was a relatively moderate Republican... the last of the "good" Republicans.. before the realignment of 1964 when Goldwater and the conservatives seized control of the party.

Even Truman held Ike in high regard.

Would be considered a liberal by today's GOP.

Actually, Goldwater wasn't all bad. Hated the religious right, Favored gays in the military, and was against government intrusion into private lives. Big environmental supporter.

Only thing that makes him conservative is his lobbying for a strong military.

Damn, I'd almost vote for him nowadays.

Go figure.

But on second thought, he was pretty rude to Kennedy at the inaugeration (sp?). Refused to come out and congratulate him or ride with him as all previous presidents had done. Was quite a "scandal" in its day. Started the end of bipartisanship, IMO.

39. I voted for Teddy
I always did have a soft spot for him (probably the result of seeing Arsenic and Old Lace too many times as a kid.)

What surprises me is how many people here think Eisenhower was okay. Is it just because of that speech about the military-industrial complex? Believe me, I lived through the 50s, and Eisenhower was not okay:

In many ways he was a proto-Bush, although not as actively evil. He'd risen in the army by knowing who to suck up to, not because of any military skills. He spent most of his administration playing golf. A lot of the time, he didn't seem to have a clue as to how to navigate from one end a sentence to the other. (He was the first president to pronounce "nuclear" as "nuke-yoo-lar.") His greatest appear was his likeability, while he left the real dirty work to his vice-president, Nixon.

His administration began with the CIA overthrow of Mossadegh in Iran in 1953 and Arbenz in Guatemala in 1954 and ended with the Gary Powers U-2 incident in 1960. In between, the CIA ran amok in one country after another. By the end of the 50's, the United States was more hated than at any time prior to the present day.

The right-wing was in the ascendent all through the 50s. McCarthyism was at its peak around the time Eisenhower was inaugurated, and even though McCarthy's fortunes went downhill after the Army-McCarthy hearings in 1954, the power of the right to intimidate and persecute leftists barely waned until the 1960's.

As one result of the right-wing dominance, "Under God" was added to the Pledge of Allegience and "In God We Trust" was made an official motto of the United States. The subways were full of signs saying, "The family that prays together stays together." It was a horrible time to be a non-conformist.

With rare exceptions, culture in the 1950's was homogenized, stifling, and pre-packaged. The greatest attempted rebellion against 1950's conformity -- rock 'n' roll -- was viciously attacked and denigrated, and by the time Buddy Holly died in 1959, it had been almost wiped out in the US. By the end of the 50's, Mad Magazine and off-Broadway theater were almost the only surviving pockets of sanity.

I could go on far longer than I have -- but I think I've made my point, that despite the attempts of revisionist historians, I can see almost nothing good to say about Eisenhower.

Why not Nixon and Ford, Reagan and Bush...or Harding, Cooledge, and Hoover?

The only Republican that would be up to the challenge of the 21st century would Roosevelt. And he would be fighting the immoralism and godly attitude of corporate America, using the "Rough Riders" to chase down terrorists, and protecting our Natural Resources from being exploited by corporations.

He's no Democrat, but he would be the most qualified on that list to handle today's problems.

60. In order
1. TR - Going back when the Republicans were the liberal party (yes, there was a time.)

(Hon. mention to Taft and McKinley, who were also good presidents)

2. Ike - Intelligent, good leader, moderate

3. Ford - Was right to pardon Nixon. Felt that persecuting him would tear the nation apart. Really helped to heal the nation. Honest man. Last of the mildly progressive Republicans.

4. Coolidge - Hey, he looks like Conan O'Brien!

5. Reagan - Liked him over Mondale in '84 (yes, I admit that!). I just thought Mondale was a flake. Only time I veered away from a Democrat in the presidential election.

6. Hoover - Way over his head in the Depression, but has done many important things outside of the presidency.

7. The rest are shit.
