The loss of De Mello
I may be a sap who has been watching Pravda TV too much today, but this De Mello chap seems to have been quite an honorable, talented, and committed world citizen and public servant. From what I've heard (which I can never trust until I've run it through the DU purifier), it sounds like his death is quite a loss.

BTW, I first learned he was dead at DU. I checked in at CNN, and they had him listed as injured. Then I came to DU, and one poster noticed (though Blitzer, the interviewer didn't) that the man Blitzer was interviewing (Rubin?) was referring to De Mello in the past tense. I immediately went over to the network web after reading that, and they did then, just 10 minutes later, have him listed as dead. I really do appreciate the extent to which DU keeps me updated, accurately and timely. Such a classy crowd.

6. How so?
How was he pro USA? Did he have his flag pin on? Was he wearing a free republic T Shirt?

While the UN in general is I guess "pro US" I doubt he was pro PNAC. Which makes him an obstacle to their plans for Iraq.

He was critical of the US, and insisted on the UN's independence in Iraq.

Frankly, I think the man was fairly close with the Clinton administration, at least as his service in Kosovo and East Timor indicate. I expect that - like most people who care about the oppressed in the world and prefer diplomacy to bloodshed - he disliked the Bushistas to a man.

Sergio de Mello's loss is great indeed. A man of peace and TRUE compassion, a scholar and a diplomat.

Placing him next to the despicable George W. Bush for a comparison should make Americans wince in shame. We have shamed ourselves for history by allowing Bush to seize power. Not only had deMello fought the good fight on behalf of his fellow human beings, he also did so in the most troubled regions of the world, putting himself at considerable risk. So, unlike the unelected fraud currently occupying our White House, he demonstrated both compassion and courage. A man of wit, strength, intelligence and character, de Mello makes George W. Bush look like the infantile bully and rank coward he is.

The security was lacking. The country isn't ready for
infrastructure changes until peace is in place.
