Here is an opportunity to reach Iraqis – and others in the Arab and Muslim world – in a simple "people-to-people" way. We will send to appropriate Arab media outlets photographs of ordinary Americans holding a handwritten message, an expression of what they feel in their hearts about the war and its results. The power of visual images has brought us many gruesome and shameful messages from Iraq: Let's use the same visual tool to send back messages of compassion, shared grief and a sense of our oneness as human beings.

We hope the messages will convey our profound sense of grief and shame, as well as our heartfelt apology for what has been done in our name. We hope for messages of peace, friendship and common humanity. Above all, we hope individuals and groups, small and large, will write original messages, expressing their own feelings in their own words.

What happens to the pictures?
We plan to deliver the photos to Arab media outlets (newspapers, Radio and TV stations, etc). for publication and broadcast in Arab and Muslim countries. We will also exhibit them for the U.S. media. We hope that with media coverage, this project will snowball, with thousands of people in hundreds of group photos reaching out to Iraqis. even if you can't/won't participate yourself, PLEASE take a few minutes to click on the site and look at ALL of the posted photos . . . collectively, they are a profound statement about who we really are . . . as opposed to what BushCo would like us to be . . .

FOR (Fellowship of Reconciliation) is a GREAT organization that I've supported, off and on, for almost 40 years (fyi, I have no current involvement of any kind) . . . FOR hopes to receive thousands of photos and plans to disseminate them to various media in the Middle East . . . if the American press won't tell the truth, it's up to individual citizens, either alone or in concert, to do it . . . this project may be THE most effective and compassionate way that we can tell our Iraqi sisters and brothers how we feel about what our government has done (and continues to do) to them . . .

p.s. . . could someone please nominate this post for front-pagedom? . . . I can't because it's my post, but I really think the Iraq Photo Project needs wide exposure . . . people all over the country are actually DOING SOMETHING that could realistically make a difference in US/Iraqi relations (at least between our peoples) . . . something to counter the BushCo travesties and show Iraqis that many, many Americans support them and oppose what our government is doing to them . . . thanx . . .
