My wife and I schedule a trip to New York City right after 9/11. We bought tickets ahead for November and spent Thanksgiving in NY. We saw Macey's Thanksgiving Day parade and it was a very warm and beautiful time with thousands of "family members". I had never been so close to strangers emotionally as at that time.
We stayed at a hotel right next to a FDNY ladder company who had lost members of their crew at the WTC and we signed their guest book, got pictures, listened to stories.
We traveled to ground zero and saw what we could. It was very cleaned up compared to previous months but it still smelled of destruction.
Anyway, one of the last nights there we saw the Les Miserables Broadway production. I had read the book a couple of times and seen part of the 10th anniversary video recording with the all star cast...but seeing the production up close at that place and at that time...really made me feel so good.
It reaffirmed for me the struggle we must all take on to gain freedom and protect freedom. We must strive for personal happiness and loyalty/love of family and friends. We must bear up under heavy losses. We must sacrifice.
Well, this is what I'm saying brothers and sisters of the human race. We must hang together or we will surely all hang separately.
