Helms, Reagan, Cheney show the word the meaning of liberalism

When stem cell research was first raised in the 90s, the then senator from N.C. supported it. Why? Because his daughter was diagnosed with diabetes.

Nancy Reagan supports stem cell research. Why? Because her beloved husband suffered from Alzheimer's.

And Lynn Cheney wants to leave gay marriage to the states. Why? Because her daughter is homosexual.

Thus, we have all those confirmed conservatives, arch-conservatives, who abandon the party line when their loved ones are affected.

While we, liberals, think of the common good, of those underdogs who often cannot speak for themselves even when, especially when, we personally are not affected by the question

This is what liberals do - think and act beyond their immediate circle.
