Ideas wanted: What should my sign say for Chicago protest on Saturday?
I have a couple in my closet -- one that has "No blood for oil" as its theme and another depicting the Iraqi casualties of war. This time I would like to focus on the soldiers.

So, what are your suggestions for wording/visuals?

BTW, here's the details in case any other Chicago-area folks are interested. (Thanks to IkeWarnedUs for posting this in activism.)

Assemble at Noon, Saturday, August 23
Federal Plaza, Adams & Dearborn, Chicago
http://www.chicagoantiwar.org/

Talking points from their Web site:
* The war in Iraq is NOT over. We've lost more troops in the 'second' Gulf war than in the first - and the body count is rising daily.
* Bush lied. Thousands of Iraqis died for a falsehood -- non-existent weapons of mass destruction -- and millions suffer from lack of water, food, shelter, the most basic human needs.
* Politically connected companies like Haliburton, Brown & Root and Bechtel are making millions as war profiteers, while our troops and Iraqi civilians become mired in a deepening cycle of violence and hopelessness.
* State governments are broke and officials are gutting health care and education -- while military spending is soaring and on the largest military machine in history.
* The Pentagon brass has told soldiers they could be court martialed for telling the truth about what's really going on in Iraq. While morale sinks lower daily, G.I.'s are told they may not come home for months or longer, and we are now being told that the U.S. military occupation of Iraq may last for years.

Remember your trying to change the minds of average people, not just preach to the choir. So "Bush Sucks" or "No Blood for Oil" and especially "We're here, we're Queer". Do nothing but make you a look like a nutcase.

The right wing press loves to pick out the nutty signs and people in demonstrations. So frankly i avoid them because I think they are just a way for people trying to vent on whatever cause suits there fancy. And the attitudes some of them make a joke of any positive message others have. I remember one woman who ran the local NOW said it best "The most violent people I've ever met were peace protesters".

So do it right, or dont do it at all.

"The most violent people I've ever met were peace protesters"

One woman's opinion and you take it as gospel and use it to condemn an entire movement?

Well, I have more anecdotal evidence for you. If you look back at antiwar protests just who was threatening who? The war supporters called us treasonous traitors and I recall stories of people having things thrown at them or being spit upon. Confrontations were initiated by those who supported the war and protesters just stood their ground. There was a suggestion floating around that you should repeatedly punch a war protester to demonstrate to them that nonviolence doesn't work.

If you are talking about anarchists or the black bloc, it would be as fair as using the KKK to characterize Conservatives as it would be using anarchists to characterize the peace movement. Anyway, they were only active in a few locations like D.C. and S.F. and certainly did not have the endorsement of organizers.

Furthermore, I'm quite surprised a NOW spokeswoman would even say that considering NOW's support of choice. If you want to talk violence among protest groups, anti-abortion fanatics certainly have cornered the market between clinic bombings and murdering abortion providers. But the woman from NOW thought peace advocates were more violent.

BTW, we are not protesting peace, we are protesting war.

32. Violence
We have been holding peaceful protests in our town since October 2002. Some of the incidents against us by pro-war people: physically attacked protesters twice, knocked them down and kicked them; ran their car up on the curb and over our signs; threw objects at us; physically threatened two women protesters by walking at them forcing them to walk backward to avoid being run down; followed our protesters around and held their flags so they hit the protesters in the face; local radio host Pat Snyder encouraged callers to his show who said they would shoot, strangle and drown protesters. In Brainard, Minnesota peace protesters were not allowed to march in the 4th of July parade as the local police felt they could not protect them from the war crowd. There has not been one incident of the peace people attacking the war crowd. So now, who's violent?

Thank you for having the courage of your convictions! Being in the Chicago area, it's more Democratic and much less confrontational. Rows upon rows of riot-clad police were the biggest source of intimidation here.

Are your protests continuing? Are your numbers picking back up? What general area of the country are you in?

44. Continuing Protests
No, the numbers are not increasing. Right now there are only four of us who are the faithful protesters. The encouraging factor is that almost every week at least one or two people take the time to come over and thank us for what we are doing. Also, the reaction from the people driving by has become increasingly positive in the past several weeks. We get a lot more thumbs up, peace signs and toots than we used to get. And a lot fewer middle fingers.

48. Ok, forget my peace protesters being violent line and go back...
What is the overall message your trying to get across and how can you say it in a constructive matter that wont have "average" peole thinking your crazy?

Remember your trying to change the mind of the average person. A worn out slogan like "no Blood for Oil" and "Bush Sucks" wont really work to change anybodies mind.

Maybe you can use a market analysis approach. Your not going to change the minds of certain prowar people. And some people are already on your side, you dont want them switching over. Its the middle ground where you can make the most difference. I suggest trying to talk to those people and developing a marketing strategy based upon what you learn. I know it sounds complicated but you have to outthink you opponents.

It wouldnt even hurt to go on that radio station. Antiwar people went on stations here and did a pretty good job. Just be ready for what they throw at you. Good luck!

50. Thank you for being willing to backpedal a bit
:-)

I agree with the rest of what you are saying. I wouldn't have used many of the slogans here because they are too strident for my personal tastes. Given the limited space of a sign, it is quite difficult to convey a complicated, nuanced message.

Don't have time to do a focus group between now and Saturday (Working 1 1/2 jobs, I'll be lucky to find time to make the sign.), but you obviously have some background in this area.

Out of the ideas presented here, what do you think would resonate? What visuals would you go with?

52. Well to be honest...
none of them.

Well first thanks for reading the rest of my blip and responding. I hate when people pick apart others peoples stuff without looking at their main points. It makes me not want to write anything to deep.

Ok, saying that you asked and I'll tell you I didnt read any sign idea that would have made any "average" person think or heavens tell, change their mind. Did you????

You say you dont have time to do a focus group. Working 1 1/2 jobs means being around alot of people. Ask some of them! And remember. LISTEN! Then thank people for giving you input. Remember even people with different opinions are human beings just as important as you are.

So I'd like to ask again 3 main questions:
1. What is the overall goal or message your trying to get across??
is it attainable or even possible? ex. saying "Peace Now" or "Impeach Bush" wont happen. Dont waste your time.
2. What is your target audience?
3. What message do you want to avoid?

When I was in college I spent alot of prep time working on projects before I commited anything to paper or computer code. I researched, asked questions, drew things out. I spent many hours in prayer before I asked my wife to marry me, before I took a job, and before most other major decisions.

Please think about this for awhile. Remember changes can happen in small steps and changing one persons attitude at a time.

Good luck!

53. Unfortunately
if you knew what I did for a living, you would understand why I can't use my co-workers as my focus group -- not, of course, if I wanted to remain employed anyway. I will give it some more thought, but I don't think a single sign is going to change anyone's mind.

As you know, people have to hear a message multiple times in multiple formats before it will even bubble up into their consciousness. The face-to-face contact that I have with friends and family on a daily basis has done far more to change any minds than a protest march.

To me, the impact of a protest in numbers -- how many people felt passionately about something to get up off their butts and turn off the TV -- not necessarily what each individual message is. I also think its important tool in engaging and solidifying the communal bonds among people.

61. A few ideas
I'm not an expert on protesting, so the others here may have better ones - I think the focus on middle issues, like soldier and Iraqi deaths, vet benefits cuts, etc may be more effective than something like no blood for oil which may make it easier to mark protesters as 'fringe' or left-wingers.
To that extent:
Bush Lied - People Died
Bush Lied - They died (with picture of US soldiers or Iraqi kids/elderly)
Stop cutting their benefits (picture of disabled vets)

how about " I love giving the left a bad name"

either way no slogans I've seen yet are going to change anyones mind.

I suggest instead you organize a funddrive to support the families of servicemen who died or were injured in combat.

86. Cant, I'm from KC although my wife, kids and I visited Chicago
in June and enjoyed it. Except for all the traffic, now THERES something to get mad about. We especially enjoyed the art museum and seeing all those famous paintings.

Also I have kids and I hate it when people in demonstrations put their kids in the front line so they get a sympathy vote from people. But some people do anything for the cameras.

I still think your wasting your time, theres nothing constructive to come out of this and your probably going to turn more people against your cause than make converts. You'll be out with a bunch of idiots with stupid slogans who have made protesting the biggest thing in their life. Whod like to throw things at polics and break windows for an afternoon of fun.

Good luck.

90. If you look at the threading
my invitation was directed at Robbien, not you. You have made it abundantly clear how you feel about protests -- I'm not trying to force you to come but I don't know why you are so adamant about discouraging others from coming.

Just so you know, I do have better things to do with my life but feel this is important -- just because you don't agree doesn't mean you're the final arbiter on whether protesting is a waste of time.

Civil disobedience is a long-standing tradition that has effected many changes in our country. I guess all them women-folk should have stayed home instead of lobbying for the right to vote or the union organizers shouldn't have pushed for child labor laws and better working conditions. I'm sure the country would be a better place if the march on Washington, which marks its anniversary this weekend, had not taken place. I'm sure there were plenty of critics telling these people to just stay home.

Furthermore, I've been to several protests in Chicago and I have to disagree with your observations. The protests drew people from all walks of life, including seniors, veterans, entire families, and religious groups representing many faiths. The harsh images you may have seen on your television certainly are not representative of what is out here in Chicago.

Protesting is NOT the biggest thing in my life, but I am trying to fight for my country the best way I know how and this is just one of many things in which I am involved. You obviously have your own strategies and that's great. Why trash someone else's?

Lastly, the protests in Chicago have NOT been violent. I ascribe to the philosophies of Ghandi and King. If violence was a part of this, I would not be taking part. I have never thrown anything at police or destroyed property, nor would I. In fact, if I saw that taking place, which I never have, I would try to stop it.

93. The reason I trash demonstrations is that believe it or not I
want you to succeed. But your method (mass protesting)of putting forth the message will only turn people against us. Frankly I think you want to do something and people like you have gotten into the habit of protesting so much you dont even stop to think how it ceased to be a legitimate method of getting your point across 30 years ago.
Dont believe me? Think about how when the war started demonstrators jammed San Fransisco. Even liberal SF got fed up with them and demanded the police take action.

I think your confusing intelligent protesting of the past with what you see today. There are NO Gandis, Susan B. Anthonies, Martin Luther Kings, or even Wavy Gravies in the peace movement today. When women marched for voting rights or MLK made his "I have a Dream speech" their message was clear. Now you compare that to some of the proposed signs people have suggested

ex. "Bush Sucks", "If I Only Had a Brain", "AHole was Awol"
I'm sure you'll see signs like that and more. And how many other people who are pushing other agendas are going to show up?

And all those different people you say show up. Sure in a city like Chicago with several million you'll get some diversity. But I repeat "Your Preaching to the choir!".

Well its your life. But please remember that not everyone is your enemy and your actions and the demonstrators around you reflect on everyone with your ideas.
