What I did say was it is a fallacy to assume Edwards is a great debater because he was a trial lawyer. If you can't admit he was quite unimpressive in the primary debates, you either didn't watch them, or you aren't being honest with yourself.

And just because Cheney has a droll, low-key style doesn't mean he isn't an effective debater. He clearly made Lieberman his bitch in 2000 without looking like an asshole. I agree that was probably more Joe's fault than Cheney's skill, but still, don't underestimate this guy. Edwards will have to simply do better than he did in the primaries.

47. Kerry is a Top Gun in debate. Why I remember

back a decade or more ago, when Kerry was challenged for his Senate seat by William Weld (R), who later went on to be Governor of Masschusetts.

One summer and fall they held a series of 6 or 8 televised debates. The debates were fantastic political theater. Weld, a Harvard man and a prosecutor with a REPUTATION, was terriffic -- intelligent, articulate, forceful, and witty. But -- in the view of most every one who saw the series of debates on TV -- Kerry kicked Weld's butt.

In short, Kerry knows how to handle himself in a debate. Edwards may be good, too -- apparently yet to be proven -- but Kerry is the real, tested, primed and all-fired McCoy: A Debate Master.

Being a good trial lawyer does not automatically mean one is a good debater. (Appellate advocate would be a closer fit.) Trial lawyers are good because they 1. Have good cases; 2. Have the dough to spend on the best experts; 3. Prepare like mad for the trial so there are no surprises (One common skills as a trial lawyer is ability to learn large amounts of information fast - very helpful in debate preparation); 4. Don't be a dick so the jury likes you, especially if your client is not so sympathetic.

Does Edwards have the intellect and ability to be a good debater -- of course. But it is a skill and must be learned. Cheney, whatever else he is, is smart. Edwards has youth and "change" on his side. Edwards is vulnerable if Cheney can make him seem like a lightweight.

But who cares, people vote for the man on top. And Kerry WILL carve Bush like a Thanksgiving turkey.
