FEATURE-Kidney trade makes victims of Pakistan's rural poor

MATEELA, Pakistan, Aug 18 (Reuters) - Liaqat Ali ignored the advice of his wife and his family. The only way he saw to repay a debt of 104,000 rupees ($1,800) was to sell his own kidney.

Three years ago a private Pakistani hospital stumped up the cash he needed, but Liaqat never really recovered from the loss of his right kidney.

In too much pain and too weak to work for two years after the operation, Liaqat soon found himself back in debt.

"I wish I had never sold my kidney, but I did it under compulsion," he told Reuters, taking a break from his work in the baking hot orange groves around the village of Mateela. "Even now I can only work a few days at a time before feeling ill."

Pakistan is fast becoming the new "mecca" for the trade in live kidneys, banned in many parts of the world including neighbouring India.
