Check this out!!!! Note the statement - he graduated first in his class at West Point!

General Wesley K. Clark, Arkansas - Democrat Retired four-star army general Wesley Clark has made visits to New Hampshire, North Carolina and other key states in 2002 to endorse local Democratic candidates. He followed that up with meetings with top national and Iowa party leaders.

1. They labelled him as a Democrat.
Does he know that? Does that ruin his "non-partisan" strategy?

Everytime he's interviewed, they something about the other 9 Dems and ask how he would be different, he no longer says "I haven't said I'm a Dem", he just answers.

3. Factual error in your post: He is NOT the 1st general since Andy
Jackson to run for president as a Democrat. More recent than that was McClellan, who lost to Abe Lincoln in 1864.

6. I assumed that was a typo
And that it was supposed to say "first general to run for president as a Democrat." As written, the sentence doesn't end properly anyway.

5. Clark is Very Smart, Distinguished Career
Did he and Bill Clinton go to Oxford at the same time?

I'm so proud of the Democratic candidates this election cycle -- even the ones who aren't running. :-) Not a dim bulb in the lot. Many are just plain brilliant.

Bill Clinton went to Oxford a couple of years later than Clark.

10. He's probably just jealous, as I am
about missing out on a Rhodes. If the general wasn't such a great candidate, I'd be pissed too! So close...some say this is what motivated Ken Starr to after Clinton...

12. Two Questions Please
(1) In the Esquire article on Clark, it states that he is fluent in four languages. I have read elsewhere that he is fluent in Russian and Spanish. What is the other foreign language that he speaks?

(2) Regarding his work as a White House Fellow in the Office of Management and Budget, what were his activities during this one-year period? Did he gain any experience in how the Executive Branch functions?

13. 1) The hated French, iirc.

2) Probably, he advised them on military procurements and the like, and lobbied for the Army on budgetary in-fighting issues. As for how much he learned about how the Executive Office works, it's anyone's guess, although I doubt he would have come into contact with EO people too often, outside of his regular OMB contacts. OTH, he was appointed SACEUR by Clinton's team aafter his stint with OMB, so it's likely there was some kind of contact there.

14. I dunno if this helps much
but his job description as a White House Fellow was "Special Assistant to the Director" of the OMB. So maybe sort of like a very, very high level shadowing/internship?

15. "fluent in four languages"
Edited on Mon Aug-18-03 05:19 AM by RatTerrier
I chuckle with glee every time I hear that line.

Imagine, GWB can barely master one language.

Must be that "War against Terra" thing.

Hee hee!
