Saw it last night in that bastion of liberalism, Santa Cruz, CA.
It was by far the biggest event ever at the Del Mar theater. They had 7 or 8 shows yesterday, ALL sold out. There was a festival atmosphere in the street outside while we waited to get in. Two voter registration tables were set up, a table for the Committee to Defeat George Bush was selling raffle tickets and handing out literature and a homeless advocacy group had a table.
Street musicians performed, including an incredible drum and trumpet ensemble that literally stopped traffic because of the crowd gathered around it.
Street-theater types handed out fake Bush money, people were selling BobBush inflatable dolls - 5' tall each, suitable for punching (I bought one!):
The sidewalk food stand in front had to close early - they sold out of everything. It was one of the biggest impromptu parties I'd ever seen downtown.
Inside, the huge theater was packed. There aren't many Bush-lovers to be found in these parts, so the crowd was enthusiastic and engaged. As the lights went down for the main feature, the guy next to me yelled out "Bush Sucks!" and received a hearty round of applause.
I won't go into the movie itself, as so many other people have done so better than I can. But suffice it to say, we cheered, hissed, booed and laughed at all the right times. At the end, many could be seen with tears streaming down their faces.
Yeah, I love Santa Cruz.
