'Fahrenheit' overheats Friday B.O.

Boffo sales put doc in running for No. 1 spot

By GABRIEL SNYDER

Buzz works.

After weeks of debate and media coverage, "Fahrenheit 9/11" opened today far better than expected.

An estimate of just how well it could do is difficult to make, but as of 3 p.m. on the West Coast, it looks as if Michael Moore's doc could sell between $6 million and $8 million worth of tickets on its first day.

Playing at 868 theaters, the pic would have an amazing one-day theater average of $6,912 at the low end of that range.

It is still too soon to tell where "Fahrenheit" will end up for the weekend, though the strong perf out of the gates makes the pic a contender for the No. 1 spot at the box office.

2. I believe it...
the theatre near me, a huge multplex, was FULL. I had to sit on the stairs with about 10 other people. Every seat was filled and this theatre usually has about 8 people in an afternoon show.

This is IT.

For Moore's next big thing, a town hall meeting, Monday night. Sign on at http://action.moveonpac.org/f11/

3. Hey thanks for posting this
I was just wondering. My theater was packed, in the middle of the Midwest, at 1pm on a weekday.

The crowd was rowdy. One old lady even threw something at the screen!

6. Good news from ya'll, thanks!
As someone who probably will never see the movie, and as someone who really wants the rest of America to become more comfortable with expressing themselves concerning 9/11, it gives me great pleasure to read about this movie's fantastic reception. Great pleasure! Thanks.

Keep it coming.

9. Rottentomatoes.com is giving it a 84% Fresh rating
Of 135 reviews, only 22 are rated as "rotten."

Much better ratings than The Passion, as I recall.

10. Loews in Pittsburgh (Waterfront) was sold out
I was at the 7PM showing and theater was full. Lots of clapping at many points in the movie. Big ovation at the end. On way out I noted the board saying 10:00 and 11:30 shows were sold out. I was glad to see a lot of 20 and 30'ish people there. A lot of the people at 7PM show were from the Kerry meetups from this area.

There's 181 people signed up for a Moveon community meeting at University of Pittsburgh Monday night, and since flyers for this were being given out at theater I'm sure there will be more.

11. 4 Screens At The AMC-30!!!
We gave up for tonight. I can wait...looks like it'll be around for a few days at least

The local AMC already had it booked into their #1 Cinema...the largest, as well as 3 other screens. My daughter told me the only time she's seen a movie on that many was the Gibson flick and Harry Potter. The hype is drawing them in...and big time.

We tried to hit one of the 7:30 showings. We couldn't get reserved tix (those won't start til Monday) so took our chances in heading over. The place was mobbed...a big banner with Fahrenheit 911 was over the box office and the other movies (pardon me for having the memory of a flea on such things) had just a few people walking up and in.

The line for Fahrenheit tickets was for the 10:00 show...and two of the screens, including #1 were sold out...so was the midnight show. We could have gotten into the smaller theater, but I'd like to share this one with a lot of people.

We caught a lot of buzz in the lot of people curious about the movie. A friend of my daughter (another fine "product" of Pleasant Valley Sunday: translation Dad's a rich white coroporate) said she was seeing it cause she wanted to hear what all the noise was about. She knows Moore is anti-Bush and against the war...she isn't...and is curious why. I like that attitude.

Anyway, the right wing is gonna scream...just like many here did over the Gibson movie. And Moore couldn't be happier. Say good, say bad, just say. Wouldn't it have been a pisser if this movie had been released and ignored? No media? Let the wingnuts yell real, real loud...I heard box office cash registers ringing.

BTW...catch Jeff Greenfield's take on this. Excellent. He said "you don't go to a gun fight with a knife" in how Moore is fighting the Right wing by doing what Rush & Hannity and others have been getting away with for years. Twisting a fact or an opinion through the use of popular culture. OFW!

14. This news more than anything I saw in the film is what makes me cry.
Edited on Sat Jun-26-04 07:38 AM by anarchy1999
The hunger for real news and the movement that is happening, slowly, but surely. Where is our 4th estate?

By the way, how many had the chance to catch Jon Stewart with Larry King on Friday night? It was a treat. We stayed up until 2:00 am to catch it and tape it. What a way to end an evening. Activism overload coming soon...... stay tuned.

On edit:
the other half of anarchy1999 said the other day (tues or wed) that this would be "boffo box office hit". He called it.
