Bush Admin makes Goldwater look sane.
I was absolutely stunned that the Justice Department memos said that the President could do all that was necessary to protect the US, even it it meant ignoring US law as well as International law.

Most of you are too young to remember Barry Goldwater's campaign for the Presidency, except maybe you remember the "Daisy" ads that LBJ ran against him, but I remember what scared the crap out of people about Goldwater at the time.

It was a comment he made in his acceptance speech at the Republican Convention. He said "Extremism in pursuit of Liberty is no vice. Moderation in pursuit of justice is no vitue."

Dose this look familiar?

Isn't this a sucinct description of Ashcroft's Justice Department?
...of Rummy's Department of Defense?

These guys make Goldwater look rational.

3. Part of his appeal
in the South, was that he refused to condemn the KKK and other extremist groups (als John Burch Society). I don't recall anything specifically about christian conservatives though....

(Yeah, I did live in the south then)

6. Goldwater HATED the Christian Right -- link
from 1998:

http://www.businessweek.com/bwdaily/dnflash/june1998/nf80601d.htm

Sadly, like many prophets, Goldwater was later marginalized by his own disciples. Indeed, today's GOP is a battleground between the economic conservative/social libertarians whose roots go back to Goldwater and the religious right -- whom Goldwater detested. The Arizonan favored abortion rights, had no objection to homosexuals serving in the military, and generally believed that government had no business intruding in the personal lives of any American. Goldwater famously said that Jerry Falwell, a leader of the Christian Right, "deserved a boot right in the ass" for pushing his values on the GOP.

2. The Right has moved the whole country to the Right
Back in '64, Goldwater was vilified as being so far out of the mainstream and so far right that he could never get elected.

However, with the Religious Reich & others throwing billions into RW think tanks & media consolidation, they have successfully moved the political dialogue so far to the right that Goldwater would now be considered a moderate Republican for his pro-environment views (I think he was pro choice as well?)

I hope that Americans can see thats whats happening now. But yesterday we saw 60% of CNN.com poll takers said that torture could be justified. Thats the kind of thing that worries me. Americans that still think we can win the WOT with guns, bombs and torture. Wake the F up!

8. Goldwater was a really interesting character
He was viewed as extreme in his time, but in many ways, he was more of a libertarian than anything, except on defense. He is one of the few Republicans and certainly the only opponent of civil rights legislation that I have any respect for, because while most people just used "states rights" as a codeword for racism, all accounts I have heard from liberals and conservatives alike have indicated that Goldwater was really a principled states-rightist and not a racist. And he was a lot better than today's Republicans on social issues...if I understand correctly, he opposed the religious right faction of the party that has become so dominant today.

9. I screened the Goldwater interview clip from "Cadillac Desert" ...
... for my resource management class. In it, he looks back on the damming of rivers in the Southwest, and expresses regret. The students are mostly in their teens (and Canadian at that) so they hadn't heard of him before ... anyway, when I remarked that he used to be That Scary Republican Guy, the kids looked shocked and said that next to George W., he seemed reasonable and reassuring.
