Sobering commentary on the new "Guy James Show" website.

Funny, I always thought that exponentially increasing audiances was a "Good" thing.

Just goes to show how wrong I can be sometimes...

1. I always thought so, too
:-(

I really, really do not understand why those who listen regularly & do not donate...do not donate. I can understand for those who just can't find the money, but surely that can't be the case for the entire non-donating audience?

25. Tain't for Everybody!
We understand. Don't hurt yourself financially. The Guy James Show is here to support America's working families. Our country has fallen into the grasp of the "Cheap Labor Conservatives" ....and it's our challenge to return America's work force to a dignified existance!
Thanks for your support!!!!

6. I would love to help out financially again
(just gave a significant donation a few months ago), but unfortunately due to Jeb inspired FL state education cutbacks, my wife just lost her job as an elementary school councilor. :-( Things will be a little tight at our house for the next year or so. I do encourage others to give what they can to keep Guy and Michael on the air.

23. Anything & Everything!
We're talking to AnShell, we're talking to i.e.America, we're talking to Sirius satelite Network, we're talking to XM Satelite Network, we're talking to Democracy Radio, Inc., we're talking to National Progressive Network, we're talking to Liberal Bias Press Assoc., we're talking to anyone and everyone, including DNC, State Democratic Party, Local Democratic Organizations, Unions, private foundations, Corporations, individual investors, and commercial advertisers. We follow every lead, we create new leads, we imagine leads, we chase long shots, sure shots, hot leads, cold leads....we make cold calls, speaking engagements, club solicitations. We invest our own money, our friends' money, our familys' money, our life savings. We contribute our time, our talents, our energies, our dreams, our imaginations, and our passions.
So your question is "why don't they contact AnSell or i.e.America?"
Well, we've been doing that for months....the real question is.....why don't they contact us?

11. Never do auto subscription
I don't listen to the show because audio doesn't really mix with where my computer is in my home. But I avoid auto payments, the only one I have is my car insurance. I had to close my bank account to get AOL to stop dinging it and after that, no more. If he has a one time donation place, I missed it.

1) We now have Amazon books and CafePress Tshirts, etc.
2) Email your contact list to listen to Guy James and mention donations are needed if they like the show.
3) We still have the steering committee thread over in Meeting Room here at DU.

If you are in FL listen on the radio at 1660 AM at 3 - 6 PM, or on the web at http://www.theguyjamesshow.com/ click listen live - if you have Windows Media Player, the player should launch automatically.

You can try now although you will get an error message from WMP. Let us know if you have problems.

22. Can we get some numbers?
Michael, can you post some real numbers regarding costs of the show? Things like, per hour rate for air time, streaming costs, salaries, etc.

I think that if listeners had more of an idea of the costs it might help.

I think that you and Guy need to stress the listener supported aspect a little more often during the show.

Why not do an on air fund-raiser?

26. one question
I'm just a little curious about this. I listened one time and really enjoyed the show. Guy James has a really great folksy way about him that I think would appeal to people all around the country. He gets the important info across in a way that, I think, is disarmingly affable. does that make sense? Oh well. Anyway that was my impression.

My question though is this: I thought the show was on a commercial station? How does it work? Do you do the show for free for the station or is it a non-commercial station? I really don't know. Does the station its self take donations or do we donate directly to the show? What's the scoop on this?

28. Guy buys time from the station
Donations need to go directly to Guy via pay pal or snail mail. Guy also pays for the streaming audio, and that varies with listener usage. Plus it costs money to be able to download archived shows.

Right now Guy and supporters are the sole income, Guy pays all this out of HIS pocket to provide us liberal Dems a voice. No staff gets paid, as far as I know. I volunteer my marketing services, Frank is our Web Guy, and Guy, Michael, and producer also get no pay. Liz is an intern, so I don't know what that deal is.

30. Flame me if you wish......
(though I am a Guy James supporter AND donater...)

but quite frankly, the "reasons" why some people haven't donated don't quite cut it with me. :eyes: EVERYBODY has a bucket full of pennies stashed somewhere! :)

I don't have a lot of money right now, I've got debts and rent and food to buy, etc, yet I give a little bit each month.... don't consider it a bad expense at all....I enjoy contributing to something positive....it's the very least I could do.

EVERY bit counts, folks, if somebody is going out of their way to give it's the least we can do to give what we can. :)

45. Follow The Money
The Guy James Show buys the time every week (we pay an hourly rate of several hundred dollars per hour). We own 100 % of the time, and that leaves us complete freedom to sell as many commercials as possible within our 3 hour time period (Saturdays, 3-6PM). That was the good news. Here's the bad news; We are broadcasting from "BEHIND ENEMY LINES" in the most conseratively dominant market in America. The station we broadcast from, WCNZ 1660 AM in Napls, Florida serves an
area totally dominated (3 to 1) by Republicans. This means that even businesses in the area that may be sympathetic with our message cannot advertis on our show for fear of losing the customer base.
Therefore, we must depend entirely on listener support through donations.
Can you send $5 per week?
Sincerely,
Gene Charles
Executive Producer,
The Guy James Show

On the home page of the Guy James site the first link on the upper left is LISTEN LIVE!. This only works from approximately 5 to 10 min before the show ( 2:50 PM EST ) to approximately 5 min post show ( 6:05 PM EST ).

To hear show archives (posted from 2 to 24 hours post show) got to
Guy's front page and click the SHOW ARCHIVES link and select a show. The format is .mp3 and will play in a number of free players as well as Windows Media Player.

One time, even though I don't listen except rarely.

I'd pay for a subscription for an MP3 archive though, like I do with whiterosesociety.org for the Mike Malloy Program. I'm not around to be able to listen online here in Chicagoland, but if I had the ability to dump it on my iPod to listen on the train or at work... hint hint hint :) $5-10 a month would seem fair, similar to what Audible.com charges for NPR programming.

Had to change it from mms:// to http:// and then it would download the link for the streaming archive. I'm running MS Win Media Player for Mac 7.1.

But what I want (in my subscription suggestion) is a downloadable mp3 file so I can travel with it. No WMA, won't run on my iPod.
