2. Ye Gods
38% say yes. Don't they know anything about our Constitution or what our Founding Fathers intended?

4. No they don't
They are completely clueless about the fundamental principles of our country. The loony Judge down in Alabama has more in common with the Taliban than the founding fathers.

Conservatives in general don't seem to get it either (otherwise they would defend instead of try to curtail the rights of those accused of crimes).

12. Would quotes from any book offend you?
No one is saying you should or must follow anything. Does a quote from Shakepeare (sp?) inspire or offend you? I have a bumper sticker on my car that expresses something I support and if you do not support it should I remove it? I understand the Constitution and I would never support laws that forced me to support something on religious grounds.
To say the golden rule (I don't think its religious??) 'do unto others as you would have them do unto you', cannot be posted because it offends you is BS.

Whether you have a spiritual connection to a book or not should not take away from the literal beauty of it.

This has nothing to do with being "offended" but has everything to do with the Government endording religion. Religous edicts do not belong in the courthouses.

6. Can We End This Once And For All?
I have no problem with people practicing their religion but when they try to tell me that they’re particular flavor of faith is the basis for western civilization, I get a little impatient with them.

The history angle for posting the commandments isn’t fooling me. Commandments 1-5 deal explicitly with religion and no court would uphold these. No. 10, wanting what you neighbor has, is an American tradition. No one really pays attention to laws against adultery and lying. That leaves only murder and stealing. Do the Christians really think we're dumb enough to believe that only by being Jewish or Christian can you refrain from murder and stealing? These two things were likely punishable in caveman social orders and certainly before the founding of Judaism. Cornerstone of all our laws my foot!

Speaking of The Ten Commandments,” remember what Chief Wiggums said: “Where is you messiah now, Flanders?”

8. it says in the bible, anyway, that religion should be a private matter
Anyone know where that quote is located? I think it actually says that you should pray not in public, but "in the closet." Anyone?

18. It is at Matthew 6:5-8......
"And when you pray, you are not to be as the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on the street corners, in order to be seen by men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full. "But you, when you pray, go into your inner room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees in secret will repay you. And when you are praying, do not use meaningless repetition, as the Gentiles do, for they suppose that they will be heard for their many words. Therefore do not be like them; for your Father knows what you need, before you ask Him." - Matthew 6:5-8

I've used that one alot when arguing about prayer in school, etc.

9. One other thing
I might also add that in their careers, people like Ben Franklin and Thomas Jefferson knew exactly what kind of mischief religious leaders could get into. After all, it was religion that told them from a young age that they were the property of the king. The Founders knew exactly what they were doing when they constructed a firewall between church and state.

11. Ask "them" to recite the Ten Commandments
I remember, in my former life, asking a congregation what kids should know to be good Christians. To a one, they said "The Ten Commandments." I asked them to recite them to me (I was the education director back then.) They got two or three, but no way could they recite all ten. So I asked if that if the Ten were fundamental knowledge, shouldn't everyone know them.

They weren't happy with me. I have a new job now.

the Ten Commandments as they do shoving them down everone elses throats, the whole country would be better off. "Bearing False Witness" ring a bell Colin? How about "Thou shall not kill" or "Lie" Smirky. Give me a friggin' break!!!
