Why is Arnold a Republican?
Reading about Arnold's positions on many issues that would fit comfortably here at DU, I am struck by the question, why is he a Republican? Is it because Poppy appointed him to a National Fitness PR position and they became friends? Is it heredity ? How can he square being a member of a party who's activist fundie core is skewering him?

Do you think Arnold should really be a D?

1. I think it's the thick neck and the bad acting skills.
All the good actors are Dems.

13. to be a good actor you need empathy
ever watch "The Barbarian" with John Wayne as Gengis Con? it's pathetic.

2. Goes with the tough-guy image

Or so he thinks.

Also meshes well with his family's Nazi past.

3. Somebody who knew him well in the old days...
...described him as 'to the right of Ghengis Khan.' I think he's mellowed in his old age--marriage to a Kennedy helps.

7. Nothing wrong with a political awakening later in life

Maybe he was a neanderthal politically early in his life, when the R fit more comfortably. But now, maybe we should be trying to convince him the suit doesn't fit the Terminator any more.

4. he prefers a fascist style of government
and he's wealthy and advocates stupid fiscal policies designed to further concentrate wealth. He also is a political whore who can be bought.

If he were a Democrat, we'd be pillorying him in the same town square with Lieberman.

12. Wait...
...Barbra Streisand is wealthy. Does it make her a Republican or a fascist? And besides, she's not exactly a political whore, but she's part of the reason why some Dems whore to the RIAA and MPAA and try to outlaw P2P.

14. straw man and non-sequitor in a thirty-word post. Not bad.
I never said he holds these positions because he's wealthy.

I described the characteristics that make him a good fit with the Bush junta.

P2P is not under attack. Theft of intellectual property is under attack. But this is a totally unrelated subject.

6. He really should be a Libertarian.
But he knows he isn't going to go anywhere with them so he registers Republican. Libertarians, as you know, like to hang on to their money like Repukes, but want the freedom of sex, drugs and rock and roll.

I really don't like him because of his misogynism, something that will really turn me against any man no matter how hunky or how agreeable his personality may be.

9. yep, pretty much what I was going to say
he also said that the main reason he's a Republican is issues of military and national defense. So I'm guessing he's a fiscally conservative, socially liberal hawk.
