Poll question: What Should Replace Reagan's "City On A Hill" Metaphor?
Edited on Mon Jun-14-04 04:58 PM by Plaid Adder
So I was sick Friday, so I watched Reagan's whole funeral. Every time they brought up that damn "city on a hill" thing I couldn't help but think how miserably inappropriate it is for George W. Bush's America. Which revision of that slogan best befits the country Bush has created?

calimary beat me to it, sorta.

I was thinking "drunken fratboy" headline.

You remember, from back when Der Chimp was funny.
Instead of scary.

7. If these people knew their history, this quote would not turn them on.
Puritans were not as bad as some thing but still who wants to live in a church/state. Also I think RR sort of saw the country from old movies and not in its true light. Like who wants to think what we did to the Indians?

11. Yeah, I know.
The whole Reagan hagiography thing depends on forgetting most of American history and romanticizing the rest. It kind of makes you want to gag after you've been watching it for a while.

C ya,

16. On Thursday...
Rush said to pay no attention to the liberals - Gorbachev played no role in the fall of the USSR.

And every time someone points out (with a tear in their eyes) how much good saint ronnie did for the country and the world, I point out one of his misdeeds from around the world. The typical responses:

All presidents have some skeletons in their closets.
Well that probably occurred after the start of his illness (implying his mental faculties were gone and they were constructed by someone else without his knowledge/authority).

It's pretty obvious these guys have forgotten most of the recent history.

12. "Shiny city on the hill" is the phrase.
It's one of Reagan's many clever metaphors and descriptive language tricks to bamboozle his listeners. I always thought he was trying to raise an image of heaven. It's on a hill because right now we have to struggle to reach it. Of course we were supposed to follow behind Mr. Reagan and his policies to get there. I say an appropriate anti-metaphor would be the "burning pit".
