been as lyrical as Clinton could have been, but he

9. Brutally repressed?
That depends on who you talk to. I'd suggest "Lies my Teacher Told Me" for a quick, very readable overview of what Reconstruction really was going to attempt, and why it was so tragic that the attempt was abandoned after Lincoln's assassination.
