Edited on Sat Jun-05-04 04:37 PM by mopaul
i don't care what killed him, alzhiemers or the black plague, i'm glad he's dead and i don't care how many times i'm scolded or chastised for it. the day he took office was the most depressing day of my life, and i swore, that on the day he died, i'd drink a toast of celebration and figuratively piss on his grave and have said so to several gingrich sucking reagan worshipping dickheads.

fuck ronald reagan, and i hope in some small way my fuck you counteracts all the bullshit we are going to be hammered with for a fucking month after the fall of this 'greeeeeaaaaaat human being'.

fuck you ronnie, here's to ya pal. see ya in hell

203. If because of his Alzheimer's
he was not of sane mind, he was still complicit in the murder of 200,000 Guatemalan Indians and others, because beforehand he gave consent and promulgated policies that lead to such genocides. Many of Hilter's top people loved their families and pets and were kind to their ilk not to others. They were kind or likable like Ray-gun.
Was living in France during his reign and wondered why Americans were so enamored by him, and to boot Nixon became a 'statesman'.
If we are a democratic republic, what is the onus of the people?
I wonder how they kept him alive so long? Hopefully for him, he has done his purgatory.
But what is the responsibility of the people?

2. I second that!
I'm afraid that there are some people who maybe are too young to remember the damage he inflicted on this country and the world, who are buying into the right wing canonization of Reagan as a wonderful, beloved, popular president, the right wing lies and deception and leaving out of all the criminal and evil things he did. He was anything but wonderful and beloved. For anyone who lived through those years and remembers what actually happened, it was eight years of darkness.

So let me join you in your celebration, mopaul.

176. I third it!
The Raygun presidency left an indelible mark. Most notably, my original career choice (alternate energy sources) dried up because of that big oil glut. Raygun had no energy policy other than to appease Big Oil. To make matters worse, ended up in another industry and was soon one of the many unemployed, months out of college. It took me years to get back on my feet after that. As I said before, the only good thing about Raygun was he did good job with GE Theater and Death Valley Days...

I hope like hell America doesn't get any false ideas and stand behind another California actor-governor as a potential Presidential candidate...

Is that the kind of person you want to be?

As much as I disliked Reagan, he was a human being that suffered horribly in the end; I wouldn't wish his condition on anyone.

Be better than them.

36. You're not listening
I take no pleasure in anyone's suffering, but an intelligent HUMAN separates the emotion of vicarious grief from the person.

I am not happy he died

I hated his policies. His policies started this country on the road to destruction, and his policies are being carried out by his minion, *, currently.

I don't personally give a shit if he was a pathetic, sick old man. There are a lot of them out there. In fact, I know one right now that has prostate cancer, and no one will treat him with anything other than medications designed to lower blood pressure and therefore shrink it, possibly delaying his inevitable, painful death. He won't have a nation giving him sympathy for having lived an honorable life. He could probably live many more years if the HMO's that control his access to medical care didn't deny him that care.

It was during Saint Ronnie's reign that HMO's came to control the medical process. If it's not financially viable to save someone's poverty laden life, then "let'em go." I wonder how Reagan managed to live 10 years longer than most that suffer from the same illness? Did he, maybe get better care than your grandfather would?

So Reagan did bad things? No shit.

Reagan did very bad things that hurt people? No shit.

Now is not the time to demonize him. From a purely political standpoint, it only hurts our side to look this childish and vengeful right now.

54. Reagan's Legacy
Edited on Sat Jun-05-04 05:14 PM by Tuttle
REAGAN'S BAGGAGE CHECK
From "66 Things to Think About When Flying into Reagan National Airport," by David Corn, which appeared in the March 2 issue of The Nation. Corn is the magazine's Washington editor. In February, Washington National Airport was renamed Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.

=================================================================

The firing of the air-traffic controllers, winnable nuclear war, recallable nuclear missiles, trees that cause pollution, Elliott Abrams lying to Congress, ketchup as a vegetable, colluding with Guatemalan thugs, pardons for FBI lawbreakers, voodoo economics, budget deficits, toasts to Ferdinand Marcos, public-housing cutbacks, red-baiting the nuclear-freeze movement, James Watt.
Getting cozy with Argentine fascist generals, tax credits for segregated schools, disinformation campaigns, "homeless by choice," Manuel Noriega, falling wages, the HUD scandal, air raids on Libya, "constructive engagement" with apartheid South Africa, United States Information Agency blacklists of liberal speakers, attacks on OSHA and workplace safety, the invasion of Grenada, assassination manuals, Nancy's astrologer.

Drug tests, lie-detector tests, Fawn Hall, female appointees (8 percent), mining harbors, the S&L scandal, 239 dead U.S. troops in Beirut, Al Haig "in charge," silence on AIDS, food-stamp reductions, Debategate, White House shredding, Jonas Savimbi, tax cuts for the rich, "mistakes were made."

Michael Deaver's conviction for influence peddling, Lyn Nofziger's conviction for influence peddling, Caspar Weinberger's five-count indictment, Ed Meese ("You don't have many suspects who are innocent of a crime"), Donald Regan (women don't "understand throw weights"), education cuts, massacres in El Salvador.

"The bombing begins in five minutes," $640 Pentagon toilet seats, African-American judicial appointees (1.9 percent), Reader's Digest, CIA-sponsored car bombing in Lebanon (more than eighty civilians killed), 200 officials accused of wrongdoing, William Casey, Iran/Contra.

"Facts are stupid things," three-by-five cards, the MX missile, Bitburg, SDI, Robert Bork, naps, Teflon.

I think cheering his death on a public message board accomplishes nothing...adds nothing positive to the world. If you want to point out his failings as a President and the atrocities he's responsible for, that's one thing, and I welcome it and hope that the Democrats in the public eye are able to do that well instead of allowing themselves to be part of painting him as a saint. But to cheer at his passing just seems insensitive to me. Sorry.

dollar can buy. You want to see helpless? Take a trip to Chicago and check out the homeless lunatics he and his brethren kicked out on the street. Won't be to many of them living to 93...hell most of them are already dead.

Tell you what....don't lecture me about what to celebrate...the prick in question is directly responsible for the early, needless death of my father....a generous, kind, hard working man, who contributed more to society in a week, than the piece of crap you suggest I should show human decency toward, did in a lifetime.

Reagan died getting pampered in a hospital bed my tax dollar paid for. The same tax dollar he made sure wasn't available for my fathers care.

Fuck your Human Decency pal. I'll show human decency toward those who show it to me.

and suffer for all eternity the pain and misery he gleefuly, intentionally, inflicted on others.

I would hope that his lovely wife would do the same. As people like them only understand the evil of thier deeds when it is visited upon their doorsteps.

Let her seek forever her own and her husbands salvation by undoing the evil deeds they both let loose on the world. Sadly, an infinate lifespan would not be long enough to complete that task.

If only I believed their was a hell...or at the very least purgatory....alas I do not.

200. Hold it right there
"Without Reagan there would have been no 41 and definitely no 43. He is DIRECTLY responsible for both Bushes."

Yeah, he was a poo stain on the flag, to be sure, but he does not get the blame for the Bushes. It is the American public who elected Reagan and Bush I; it is our own gullible electorate that carries the burden of responsibility.

44. The AIDS crisis is on his head - many died because of Reagan
Reagan did not publicly utter the word “AIDS” during the first six years of his administration (his first public mention of the disease was made to the Third International AIDS Conference May 31, 1987). The Kaiser Family Foundation’s Daily HIV/AIDS Report for June 7, 2001 also notes that the San Diego Union Tribune quoted Reagan as telling the conference, “Final judgment is up to God.” In a 2001 speech at the Kaiser Family Foundation’s National Symposium on U.S. AIDS Policy, Dr. C. Everett Koop, Reagan’s surgeon general, said that due to “intradepartmental politics” he was cut out of all AIDS discussions for the first five years of the Reagan Administration—and that “because transmission of AIDS was understood primarily in the homosexual population and in those who abused intravenous drugs, the advisors to the President, took the stand, they are only getting what they justly deserve.”

“For Reagan apologists to act as if his record on AIDS was anything short of tragic is both inaccurate and deeply offensive to the memory of the 60,000 people who died of AIDS during Reagan’s presidency,” said Shana Naomi Krochmal, director of communications and public affairs for the STOP AIDS Project. “At a time when our nation could have led the way in preventing transmission and fighting stigma and discrimination against people with HIV, Reagan offered no leadership—only silence.”

“In the history of the AIDS epidemic, President Reagan’s legacy is one of silence,” said Michael Cover, Associate Executive Director for Public Affairs at Whitman-Walker Clinic in Washington, D.C. “It is the silence of tens of thousands who died alone and unacknowledged, stigmatized by our government under his administration.”

Ronald Reagan's Criminal Administration:

Ronald Reagan's Cabinet

"By the end of his term, 138 Reagan administration officials had been convicted, had been indicted, or had been the subject of official investigations for official misconduct and/or criminal violations. In terms of number of officials involved, the record of his administration was the worst ever."

Here's news for you: Ronnie Reagan isn't the saint he's portrayed to be, nor is Bill Clinton the devil incarnate. The truth about both lies somewhere in between and my reaction to both men's deaths will be essentially the same.

you said, I don't condemn you for saying it. It's aginst my religious and personal beliefs to wish anyone dead or take pleasure in their death, but I also don't judge others who do. We all respond in our own way. My personal memories of Reagan are all negative. I was eighteen when he first ran for President, and very apathetic politically. Although I could have voted against him, I didn't bother. In fact, it was worse than that. I went to the polling place with my boyfriend, who insisted on voting that day even though none of our friends were. He wanted to cast his ballot against Reagan. But I waited in the car; I couldn't even be bothered to go in and vote. Such is the stupidity of youth. I do try to remember that when I see uninvolved young people today.

you sorry son of a bitch.

I'm sick of the lies and distortion created by this bag of shit and forwarded to the repeater stations all over the world.

remember, REAGAN began the Military Industrial complex shift, he NEVER defeated communism, it ate itself - he had MORE people indicted than any other admin --

he sold weapons to the IRANIANS to support killer death squads in South AMerica..

he lied 110 times that he didn't remember.

the list goes on and on.. bush should be proud of this forebear.. he was the one that started drowning the baby of social programs

if it was legal to piss on Reagan's grave I would gladly do so..

he has no right to be treated humanely as one poster put it so well, you must first BE A HUMAN to be treated as such..

he starved more people that Stalin with all his cuts.

he was and is a monster and is laughing it up with satan today, probably watching direct feed CNN, FOX, etc..

if there was ever a public figure to hate outside of Hitler and Bush, HE is the one..

not a tear, and I will gladly lift my glass with you to day MOpaul, my pleasure!

Fuck you Ron Reagan, burn in hell.

83. I Cursed Ronald Reagan From the Graves of My Friends in the '80's
Edited on Sat Jun-05-04 05:40 PM by David Zephyr
There is no amount of lipstick that will ever gloss over the hateful, spiteful, cruel and callous response to the AIDS advent from Ronald Reagan's White House.

You may piss off a lot of people here with your thread, Mopaul, but I won't be one of them.

His death today brought me great sorrow...for the friends that I still miss and the stigma that was wrongly associated with their deaths. A stigma that came directly from Ronald Reagan's White House.

For the memories of my loved ones, I have not forgotten Reagan's "legacy".

I will always remember who he was and what he did.

For the rest of my life.

85. not too many people will grieve forefver over the death of a 93 year old
Man. It cannot be said that he was gypped in any way.

He lived a long life--much longer than many persons who do not have access to health care in this country, for instance. He did nothing to deserve that special care, imo. He had home aides to help Nancy, and that is something many do NOT have in this country. Many and many. Should we investigate how that was paid for, or should we just assume that he had a whole lot of money to be able to pay for home aides for the last ten years of his life? and that his loved ones were relieved of much pain because they had someone else to do all of the work for them.

Don't feel like apologizing for how you feel re: Reagan? Post here.

A lot of people got into politics because of John Kennedy, or because they wanted to fight for justice in the civil rights cause. That entrance to politics was a positive one.

A lot of people got into politics because of Vietnam, or because Bobby got killed, or because MLK got killed, or because of Watergate. These were negative entrances into politics, borne of a need to stop outrages before they swamped the body politic.

Ronald Reagan was my entrance into politics, and it was a negative entrance. I remember very vividly this President telling me that my generation would be the one to face the apocalypse, a statement that was one of the most defining moments in my life. I lived under a cloud of fear after that.

My work in politics, for my whole life, has been in the majority an effort to undo the massive damage from the disaster that was the Reagan administration.

Our mainstream media journalism is a joke because of Reagan dereguation.

Our social programs were savaged because of Reagan.

Our environmental regulations, once something to be proud of, were eviscerated by Reagan.

The manifest power of corporations over virtually every facet of our lives came because of the massive deregulations put forth by Reagan.

The AIDS virus found a long, comfortable home in America because Reagan couldn't be bothered with funding research into 'gay cancer.'

Crack owned the urban world, wracked by the aforementioned social evisceration, for years because Reagan couldn't be bothered. Whole generations of Americans died in misery because he couldn't have gven a damn about their problems.

Saddam Hussein was a creation, in huge part, of Reagan.

Same goes for Osama bin Laden, who along with al Qaeda and the Taliban went from being a side project under Carter to a front-and-center priority that led directly to the attacks of September 11, not to mention the African embassy bombings. Those two embassies were destroyed with Semtex sold to Afghan mujeheddin (nee Taliban and al Qaeda) by the Reagan administration.

Dick Cheney was a Reagan creature.

Don Rumsfeld was a Reagan creature.

Paul Wolfowitz was a Reagan creature.

Richard Perle was a Reagan creature.

John Negroponte was a Reagan creature.

Elliot Abrams was a Reagan creature.

Dick Armitage was a Reagan creature.

There was some other guy named George, who spawned an idiot named George, who also came out of the Reagan administration.

If you cannot make the direct 2+2=4 connection between the legacy of the Reagan administration and the goddam intractible swamp we slog through every day today, then I despair of your ability to follow coherent logic.

Am I happy Reagan is dead? No.

Do I have a moment of doubt as to whether or not I should speak the truth of him to as many people as I can reach with my arm? I have not one single moment of doubt.

I'm sorry you feel bad because I don't feel bad enough about this, that I am perhaps being 'disrespectful.' Ronald Reagan was my entrance into politics, and it was an ugly, frightening entrance. The Reagan legacy has been a stain across our national landscape, and my life's work to date has been the process of trying to staunch the bleeding.

If you think I'm going to back off because he's dead, think again. If you don't like it, there's a nifty little 'x' next to this thread. Hit it.

Otherwise, speak the truth here and the Devil take the hindmost.

will pitt wrote it, it's worth repeating

101. This is sad for DU
I never agreed with the man's policies but "celebrating his death" strikes me as being a little extreme. He had a family and prooved himself to be a good and decent (albeit confused and misguided conservative) human being.

All of you people who are "celebrating" the man's death are fulfilling the conservative stereotypes of liberals as being crazy, stupid, etc.

I shed no tears for Ronald Reagan, but there's something deeply wrong and unhealthy about the hatred you're holding onto with such glee.

You might consider letting go of it, even as you work to reverse everything he stood for.

I feel the same way about Shrub. His presidency is an abomination, but I don't waste my spiritual energy hating him. If I did, it's just another way he and the Repukes win.

Seems to me RR has the last laugh on you, Mopaul. He haunted you for 24 years of your life.

Great, let's give right-wingers more ammunition to use against us. You can hate the man and his politics, but how about a little sympathy for his family? Can you imagine being the caretaker of your spouse for ten long years, watching as your beloved husband/wife/partner was wasted away by a disease like Alzheimer's? What if it were your father? Watching him fade away to the point where he no longer knew who you were. And now people here are going to dance on his grave and celebrate his death. How ghoulish is that?

Ronnie had health care, he had money, he had connections. Yes, Alzheimer's is horrid but he and his had access to resources many of us never will because of his policies. You people who are spewing all of this hatred against Reagan on the day of his death are doing nothing more than giving the Freepers, the hate radio jocks such as OxyRush, Insanity, Savage Wiener, and others ammunition to use against us on their next broadcasts.

I beleive EVERYONE here on DU needs to lay off these uncalled for attacks. Another DUer here said it best: There is a time and a place for criticizing Reagan's policies. Today is not the day to do it. Let them have their day of mourning.

Those of you who feel as if they have to insult Reagan on this forum today should just log off, go to a movie, play with your children, read a book, make love to your partner, or go out for something to eat and let it get out of your systems.

We should be adopting a civil attitude towards the death of Ronald Reagan, we should be taking the high road, not the low road that many repukes took after the deat of Seantor Wellstone.

I am so dissapointed in DU today.

I have shocking news for you: the right-wing needs little more than our existence as 'ammunition' to use against us.

We could be having a Reagan lovefest here today and it wouldn't mean a crap. They hate us for opposing fascism and a dictatorial one-party state. They hate us for our beliefs, and nothing in the world will make them 'like' or 'respect' us.

So why worry? Who cares? They'll put us through their garbage disposal whatever we say or do. I've stopped worrying about what these Nazis think.

151. Reagan was a criminal
Would you be saying this if it was Saddam Hussein or Hitler who died?

Somehow I doubt it.

Reagan was a criminal. Maybe you weren't around or weren't paying attention during the eight years he was running this country. But he did tons of enormous damage both at home and abroad. He was responsible for death squads in Central America. Did anyone in this country mourn for the innocents who were tortured and murdered there because of Reagan? a few, yes but mostly no. And that is just ONE tiny example of the damage he's done to the world.

And as someone above pointed out, the freepers don't need any excuse at all to attack us. If we are always afraid of what they'll say or do we'll say nothing and they'll still attack.

The key thing here is to make sure that everyone knows EXACTLY what and who Reagan was, what he did, all of his crimes. Because now is EXACTLY the time that the right wing spin machine is gonna be cranked up on high, spinning out tons and tons of bullshit about "saint ronnie."

Your "request" is inappropriate. If you can't deal with the truth maybe you're the one who should log off and go do something else.

Edited on Sat Jun-05-04 07:53 PM by Zinfandel
(I posted this elsewhere on DU, and I'm too stoned right now to write a new one, and the prick Reagan doesn't deserve a new post from me)

So the lying conservatives had nothing to show for eight years of Reagan's pigs getting rich and fucking over everyone else and now they still insist and keep trying to pin the tag that... "Reagan all by himself brought down the Soviet Union" WHAT LYING & COMPLETE BULLSHIT!!!!

The asshole Reagan did nothing but fuck over the poor and middle-class, catered to the rich and began massive deregulation of the corporations during his time in office...The true beginning of fascism in this country and the same racist, lying, corrupt greedy pigs are in the Bush administration today!

The asshole Reagan did no more than any other president starting back with Truman, then Ike, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Reagan & Pappy Bush, to bring down the Berlin Wall and force change in the USSR.

Each of the presidents mentioned above, increased the US military defense budgets and bought new and more technologically advanced weapons systems.

This is fact. It wasn't just the asshole Reagan, the USSR was going down slowly before Reagan ever became president.

Carter for instance, increased the US military budget 5%, each of his four years in office (and just like they do now against democrats, the republicans successfully lied, saying Carter was weak on defense, same old shit and that's the tactics and lies Reagan used to win against Cater).

Actually the official fall of the USSR occurred during Pappy Bush's administration, not under Reagan's.

Clinton was the first president to significantly cut defense spending...Freaked out the weapons makers, the Pentagon, right-wing fascist, etc...

Had to come up with a new enemy...and quick, to get those bucks back and flowing again...

TERRORISM!!!

Money spent on military above a certain amount is money thrown down a toilet.

To all here that are celebrating, Reagan hurt many people by his policies. But his family now suffers his loss as a father, a husband, a grandfather. Everyone is precious to someone in this world regardless of their faults.

Those that wish him and his family this much venom at this the time of his death are the lesser for it. You don't have to agree with the deification that will surely come, but you don't have to add to their misery, either.

And again, once more...People want and need to be informed of the facts, not the bullshit!!!

That they are being fed on television...Reagan was a ultra-right-wing, lying, anti-choice, environmentally destructive, union bashing, poor hating, de-regulating corporatism loving, imperialistic old fool. (And I'm being gentle here, because he died).

Being informed and getting the TRUTH is what this DU forum is suppose to be about...

144. Well-said!
Iran-Contra Reichwing terrorist Ronald Raygun is dead, and the only downside is his death will engender GOP support on s-election day. His death only helps to serve Diebold...

totally classless. congrats.

if bush gets a small short-lived bump for this, then so be it. ronnie was twice the president he is, and if people here can't seperate the man from the politics even after his death, then that doesn't give me much faith in our party.

It doesn't fucking matter what we do or say. They want to line us up for the gas chambers any way no matter what.

If all there was were threads praising the evil fuck all day long, it wouldn't change the fact that about a third of this nation would kill you as soon as look at you because you're a Democrat.

181. I'm posting this all over in the hopes that people come to their senses.
When my hero Paul Wellstone died a few years ago, the progressive liberal movement lost someone who they viewed as a champion and an icon. Some conservatives took the opportunity of his passing to mock his ideals and score cheap political points at his expense. They were terrible people for doing so.

Some conservatives, however, simply stated that although they disagreed with many of his political decisions, Wellstone was a man of his principles and at the moment it was simply a time to mourn a human being's passing and give condolences to his family. In particular, Rush Limbaugh showed restraint and behaved appropriately (surprisingly enough).

My question to those here at DU is this: if we can't be at least as good as that piece of garbage Limbaugh, what good are we? I LIKE being able to categorize liberals as the more humane and generous political group. I don't want to give people reason to doubt that.

I am NOT asking people to forget Reagan's many ill deeds. History will remember him appropriately, I believe. However, there is a time and place for attacking a man and his politics. The day of his death is not that day. We do ourselves and our cause a disservice when we descend into this kind of childish, ghoulish gloating at a man's death.

190. I drank a lot at dinner
I also didn't turn on any cable station that had news and don't plan to for a week or so. I'm going to be an expert at home remodeling and redecorating by the time the hysteria over this event ends in the public sphere!

I imagine that the "naming" committee is going to go *wild* now. Not only National airport and every other damn building but Mr. W_D just said he thinks they might start retroactively re-naming one boy in every family after their "god" Ronald Reagan. NOTHING would surprise me.

Personally, I had a *lovely* evening and as long as I don't have to pretend I give one hot damn that that villain is gone, I'll continue to have a lovely time...

202. There is no honor in this.
An enemy is dead, horrible as he was. He has, in fact, been gone for 10 years. Yes, his legacy is horrifying, but there is no honor in a warrior mocking a terrible enemy.

Our fight is with the living -- they are the ones trying to bury us.

205. who is a warrior?
he was just a man, elevated to a stage far beyond his skill. there is no honor in pretending he is more than that. many people died today...some were probably worthy of all the type this man is getting.

207. All progressives are the "warrior."
I agree with every thought in your post, BTW.

I was thinking in terms of the manner in which some bygone cultures did not speak ill of their most hated enemies after they died. Did you see the film "Gangs of New York?" Daniel Day-Lewis' character went so far as to keep a shrine to his fallen arch-enemy.

I'm certainly not suggesting anything that extreme, but right now, the less hatred and intemperate speech exhibited by Democrats and progressives, the better it would be for our cause, IMO.
