I'm writing Reagan's obituary here. Help me out.
All do-gooders who want to feel good about treating him with respect as (if true) he passes can happily pass on to another thread. Respect is earned with truth, and here the truth will be told.

What I have so far:

"No title yet"

“Ronald Reagan is alive but forgetting things.
He's forgotten about sending arms to Iran
for hostages - if he ever knew. If he ever
knew, he's forgotten he knew. He does not
at this time recall. He may have been an
honest man. If not, he is becoming one.”

- Dean Blehert, ‘Lest We Forget’

As the rest of the free world will spend the next several days falling over itself in overwrought praise for our fallen President, Ronald Wilson Reagan, it falls to me in this grim little slice of history to remind you what you need to know about the son of a bitch.

Simply put, everything wrong with the United States of America can be found on, around, or near Ronald Reagan. He was Willy Lowman with a General Electric expense account, and we all got sold out in the end.

...help?...

I remember one night a few years ago when the Internet was abuzz with much rumor mongering about Reagan and it was all a lie.

This is from Drudge. The same Drudge mind you who pimped stories abuot Kerry having an affair and Clinton fathering a black child. So let's just wait and see.

Also, while making the Freepers mad may not be a concern of ours, I would warn that many people in the Great American Middle--the wishy washy, Macomb County types--still hold Reagan in high regard, and attacking him now will not be helpful to winning them over to our side.

17. Reagan
Posted by a DUer some time back:

Here's a Reagan summary:

1. Fiscal irresponsibility. Ran MASSIVE deficits his entire term. We still pay interest on the bonds the government sold to borrow the money. Reagan claimed the tax cuts would generate more income to cover the deficits. It never happened--and is another Repug lie. We'll be paying interest on the $2 trillion of new debt Reagan added forever.

2. Tax burden shifted from wealthy to middle and poorer classes. Reagan cut the rates for the very highest paid, but increased the rates for those at the bottom. Contrary to Repug propaganda, Reagan signed the LARGEST TAX INCREASE in history into law. It boosted the payroll tax significantly on the lower income group.

3. Environmental setbacks. We went from progress in all areas of the environment to a standstill or worse everywhere. We still haven't gotten back on track and Bush* has made the trend very negative.

4. Social safety net for poor gutted. Reagan used the racist "welfare queen" propaganda to get even supposed Democrats to support him on this.

5. Accelerated the collapse of the union movement. Hiring scabs became the norm.

6. Supported many unsavory dictators and thugs. Got caught breaking the law illegally supporting the "Contras" in Nicaragua. The Contras were right wing goons opposed to the Socialist government.

7. Average Americans saw their standard of living decline during Reagan's two terms--in spite of economic growth. Trickle down was a miserable failure then, just like it is today under VacationBoy.

Protest song
Old Mother Reagan
She's so dumb

How come...
Old Mother Reagan went to heaven
But at the pearly gates
She was stopped!

20. An ode to Reagan from Camper Van Beethoven:
Sweethearts
(from the 1988 release, "Keylime Pie")

'Cause he's always living back in Dixon
Stuck in 1949
And we're all sitting by the fountain, at the five and dime
'Cause he's living in some b-movie
The lines they are so clearly drawn
In black and white life is so easy and we're all coming along
on this one

Cause he's on a secret mission
Headquarters just radioed in
He left his baby at the dancehall while the band plays on ...
some sweet song.
And on a mission over China
The lady opens up her arms
The flowers bloom where you have placed them and the lady smiles...
just like mom

Angels wings are icing over
McDonnell-Douglas... Olive drab
They bear the names of our sweethearts and the captain smiles
as we crash

Cause in the mind of Ronald Reagan
Wheels they turn, gears they grind
Buildings collapse in slow motion, and trains collide
Everything is fine
Everything is fine
Everything is fine

22. Wow. 30 members of Reagan's administration did time in prison.
That has to be a record.

Despite his frequent pronouncements that he advocated smaller and less intrusive government, Federal spending and bureaucracy increased in size during his administration; his increases in military and "drug war" spending were far larger than his cuts in social spending.
Reagan's most infamous foreign policy decision was in illegally financing a civil war of the Contra guerrillas against the Sandinista government in Nicaragua. The civil war claimed over 15,000 lives, according to former CIA agent David MacMichael. Reagan's determination to continue support for the Contras despite opposition in Congress led to the worst scandal of his presidency, the Iran-Contra Affair.
Reagan was regarded by some critics as indifferent to the needs of poor and minority citizens.
Although considered personally honest by most Americans, there were multiple scandals of bribery, corruption, and influence peddling involving Reagan's aides and subordinates, resulting in some 30 members of his administration spending time in prison.

27. I saw Richard Belzer performing at a comedy club in New York
the day before Nixon died. News headlines were "Nixon Near Death" and shit at the time.

Belzer said he had to get it out one last time while the prick was still alive. He then spent nearly two hours reaming Nixon for everything--His early career as a crooked car salesman/politician, the Checkers Speech, the TV flop sweat, Viet Nam, Watergate - - the whole bit. It was great.

Interestingly, Bill Maher was there that night too, though not performing.

I hope somewhere tonight, someone besides us DUers are letting this evil asshole have it too. I hope every one of the tens of thousands he murdered in Latin America is exacting a full measure of revenge now.

greed over grace, and the simultaneous dismantling of the American traditions of honesty, fairness, justice and peace.

June 5, 1988: Day 229, before Reagan leaves WH

'81 Ernest Lefever withdraws as human rights nominee after telling senators that USSR is "greatest violator of human rights" and refusing to name other guilty nations.

'87 Albert Hakim testifies that Ricahard Secord twice told Iranian officials that US would "fight the Russians in Iran" in case of invasion. First he calls remark a "bargaining method," then says it "represented the attitude of the entire delegation." 8/28

then turned against "big government" when the IRS caught him after the war and made him pay up.

Other people gave their lives while Reagan made training films in Hollywood, but Reagan was furious that he even had to pay his taxes. In wartime. Typical Rethug 'patriotism'.

It's all in Reagan's rather embarrassing autobiography, entitled "Where's the Rest of Me?". The self-serving rationalizations, the greed, the sense of entitlement, and the way he was showered with subsidies (i.e. welfare) from big business and the rich after he sold out is amazing. It's well worth a read.

Note that the book was written just before he ran for Governor of California -- but it describes the bought-and-paid-for corporate shill he was and remained for all his life.

Lincoln
FDR
JFK
Reagan.

44. He caused *thousands* of deaths right here in the USA
by cutting off so many from the only means of support they had.

Somehow, that is STILL forgotten, and only the ones south of us remembered.

I had two friends who were on the "front lines" of this battle -- one a social worker, one a paralegal with Legal Aid. They would tell me that every day they'd go into work, wondering which ones of their clients they would find out that day had killed themselves. There was *nothing* they could do to restore benefits that the Evil One cut. NOTHING. All they could do was wait for the news of each one who ended their lives in desparation.

Nothing of this was in the "news", except one small item buried in the back pages. To this day, most people in this nation, including "liberals", still don't understand the magnitude of the deaths, or even believe it. I've done searches, trying to document this time of loss, but have not succeeded. It would be GREAT if someone could finally dig up some verification of this horrible time of grief. We know of the grief in Central America, but not right here in our own country.

It's too much to hope for, but it would be a step in the right direction if those who died because of The Evil ONe could at least be remembered briefly, rather than all the remembering of The Evil ONe himself.

57. What matters more than his forgetting is our own.
Whether lessons forgotten or lessons never learned, as a people we do not learn from our mistakes. With Reagan we bought the idea that government should become a private enterprise, run 'more like a business' -- until today, when 'the public sector' is no longer recognizable. Proxy wars against populist Latin American movements in the 80s? Today we have the Colombia Plan, and happy support for the rich 'opposition' in Venezuela, and Haiti. Many of the same men, like Otto Reich and John Negroponte, were resurrected from disgrace to continue the bloodletting.

Gore Vidal calls us the "United States of Amnesia"
(although he recently said we were on our way to a lobotomy).

62. Untold Human Death And Suffering: AIDS and El Salvador
There's no way that any obituary about Ronald Reagan can merit credibility without mentioning the suffering and death that were a direct result of his "leadership" of the U.S. for eight years.

An obituary without mentioning his shameful and unforgivable reaction to the advent of AIDS or his death squads in Central America would be nothing less than a walk down Amnesia Lane.

74. So much went terribly wrong in the 80's
I never have sorted out just how much of it was Reagan's direct responsibility and how much was part of the general climate of unpleasantness. But the decade was marked by:

Deregulation and privatization. Greed-is-good mentality on Wall Street and elsewhere.

The whole complex of banking-related unsavoriness: BCCI (peak 1986-90), the Nugan Hand Bank, CIA drug-running and money-laundering, the savings and loan scandal.

Rise of the religious right (esp. 1982-86). Christian Reconstructionism/Dominionism. Reagan administration lends legitimacy to end-times nut-cults (James Watt.)

Worldwise wave of tyranny and repression. Latin America. Apartheid South Africa. First Intifada. Marcos in the Philippines.

Also, there are excellent arguments that Reagan was not responsible for the fall of the Soviet Union. The Poles and the Afghans both had far more to do with it than he did.

So, when exactly did he drink the Republican KoolAid?
He's still on the SAG site as being one of the past presidents (Ronald Reagan
1947-1952, 1959-1960). He's right underneath the infamous George Murphy, who went on to being a Repuke California senator.

85. 1st campaign speech at Philadelphia MS
Reagan was supposed to give 1st speech to the Urban League (black organization) convention in NYC.

Trent Lott, a repub member of the House, suggested he speak in MS - he might win the state

Philadelphia MS was where three civil rights workers - Goodwin, Cheney, Schwerner - were arrested by police and turned over to KKK and murdered - during MS Summer (also known as Freedom Summer) in 1964 - when mostly white college kids from outside the south went to MS to help with voter registration and voter education....the murders so angered LBJ that he forced thru the senate the 1964 Civil Rights Act

Reagan's speech was something on the order of 'I will do everything in my power to return to the states matters which belong to the states' - clear message: "states' rights" will conquer black civil rights in my administration

this to me is THE message of Reagan and the 'modern' repug party - making this statement in the same town where three civil rights workers were murdered leading to Civil Rights Act sent/sends a clear message about their lack of any concern for civil rights

Assuming Willy Loman refers to the Death of a Salesman character, at least... it is actually spelled Loman. A play on words of "low man" but not so obviously spelled like so.

I was born during the first Reagan administration and was five when he left office, so I'm afraid I don't have much else to offer.

The accidents in Reagan's third role refer to the plot involving insurance scams. The inset photo shows insurance adjustor Reagan snuggling cigar stand girl Gloria Blondell (Joan Blondell's sister). They conspire to go undercover and solve the phony racket. And they live happily every after, of course.
