The war at home
Is this the the most hate-driven election ever? I'm uhhh "pretty old" and I haven't seen anything like it before. Even 2000 seemed tame by comparison.
I'd like to think that the Repubs had a change in tactic dating back to the Newt Gingrich new republican revolution, with us Dems just recently being forced to fight fire with fire for our own survival. I know I've lashed out in anger (alot)these last few years, both in frustration and despair for my country.
This article in Capital hill Blue made me rethink myself for a while, but I don't Know if I can help myself, as my tagline indicates:

http://www.capitolhillblue.com/artman/publish/article_4623.shtml

...Still it's a good read, but I'd hate to think that all that separates us from the freepers is a mirror.

1. Try a discussion with a Republican........
Edited on Wed Jun-02-04 02:07 AM by Fear
Problem is that people grab on to their *IDOLS*, and can't criticize anymore, why?, I don't know.

"And, according to the Campaign Media Analysis Group, three-quarters of the Bush attacks against Kerry are either dead wrong or highly misleading (as are about half of Kerry’s ads against Bush)."

-> Isn't that illegal?

"They should be disgusted. You can’t turn on the radio without hearing right-wing hate mongers like Michael Savage telling homosexuals to “shut up and die” or left-wing propagandists like Michael Moore saying National Rifle Association members should be killed with their own guns."

-> I haven't hear Michael Moore say that :S

or is that what he means with
"Disinformation is a fact of life in politics. Those who practice politics for a living call it “spin.” Honest people call it lying through your teeth."

2. That picture is kind of disturbing.
Actually it is really disturbing.

That aside, this makes me more and more cynical. My friend says that he deals with it from both sides. I deal with it from the repukes, but not the dems because I agree with the dems on almost everything. At least the ones around here.

But my problem is that debate is not about both sides making valid points. It is about making the other side bend to your will. This is where the broad sweeping language comes from. In my biased view, I believe the right does it more than the left.

4. yes@disturbing, I don't think I should apologize for it though, but it
makes the point i guess - will change in a week or so for something different.

My experience is that even while having a regular discussion there are republican people that are not communicating with me anymore. (And this really was a normal discussion).

I also believe that the religion runs strongly through their veins, and for what I have said in regard to Bush (while backed up with referring material), it was just something that couldn't be true - and who knows they might actually think I'm possessed by the devil.

It does make me very sad.

7. No because what we are living through is a civil war
and I mean it.

So far this civil war had had no bullets involved...
unless you count those cops. But this is a civil war.

My fear is that on November, especially if the Right is
defeated in a massive, incfredible, no arguing about, way,
well the Savages of this nation WILL CALL for armed
insurrection. And at that point the ACTUAL shooting
civil war will start.

Make no mistake about it, we have been at War since December
12, 2000. I still remember that day. I turned to my husband
and told him... nothing good will come out of this. Sadly
when the hsitory of this time is written it will either
be the begining of the end for the American Republic, or...
among the darkest days in US History.

Only time will tell, to be quite and brutally honest.

11. Someday take out Calhoon's writings
during the 1850s, and compare and contrast. You may
be shocked.

Oh and Savage and others are on the record that they
may have to kill the child in order to save it. Yep,
they have already implied that they may have to pick up
arms. Not that they will be doing any of the killing or
the dying. Like their counterparts in the 1860s, they
will have somebody else do it for them.

That said why do you think all TERROR in this country
over the last twenty or so years has come from the RIGHT?
Bombings, firings, snipings, et al. They range from Abortion
Clinics, to Ruby Ridge (where the defendant was defended
by Spence, a man who LOVES the Constitution), all the way
to Oklahoma City. What do all of these things have in
comon? They are all members of the Right Wing. You draw
your own conclusions, but we are now facing the greatest
crisis in this country's history, since oh... 1860

20. Terror Comes From the Right...
Edited on Wed Jun-02-04 12:24 PM by Unperson 309
I have said it again and again and again... Successful assassinations tend to occur to *left* or liberal persons. John F. Kennedy, Robert Kennedy, Martin Luther King, or to leftist radicals such as H. Rap Brown, Malcolm X., Jimmy Hoffa, James Pike etc.

Failed assassination attempts tend to happen to *right* leaning folks such as the Pope, Ronald Reagan etc. Nothing at all happens to radical right folks.

I take this to mean that either the right is a *lot* better at killing the left than the left is at fighting back, or that there is some overarching plan involved! EVERY really good movement in thos country, that has been progressive and really THREATENED social CHANGE... has been destroyed! DESTROYED!

A hell of a lot more leftists have died under "suspicious circumstances" than have conservatives! Anyone care to list 'em all? I bet there'd be a pretty chilling sight!

6. Sign of the times
In the 60's that would have been a common photo...Except the "suspect" would have been a healthy, 20-something male with his sign taped to a stout 2X4 ...and the other guy would be a pig.

Are we destined to repeat Kent State, but with grandparents ?

3. Yer right...
My friend Betts and I wear buttons that have "Bush" with the "ban" sign over it.
We both have had people look at it and say they like it, and they support him, too. After we point out the obvious, the ENTIRE attitude changes. But then maybe I'm casting the 1st stone, there.
I've never felt I've had as much to lose as in this election.

Brother, ain't that the truth. Was expressing that same sentiment to my son son last night. Brings it right home, and yeah it is personal.

In the running in my book for THE campaign slogan.

10. What I don't understand is how
do Limbaugh and others get away with their hate mongering on the airwaves. Hate websites are taken down, yet they are allowed to continue to spew their garbage day in and day out. A big concern is that children are listening to it if they are in the room where an adult is listening to the program.

12. I anticipate a groundbreaking lawsuit this year
Some day some wingnut's gonna gun someone down, then point out that the victim was "destroying his country" or something similar.
His reasoning: Shawn Hannity told him he was "The Enemy" and had to be dealt with. lawsuits have been made of less.
It's a razors edge those guys are walking on hate radio, all they have to do is push the right button, on the right guy, on the right day.

Clear channel, on the other hand is a dynasty.
A lawsuit like this can change what we hear on radio, for fear of liability.
"Welcome to Happy WHAP... all good news, all the time" "Up next, a look at maple syrup imports...is it worth the cost?"

16. hmmm Have you seen Bowling for Columbine?
Edited on Wed Jun-02-04 03:17 AM by nadinbrzezinski
May not be a bad thing actually... except for REAL NEWS, but
if you want those you need to read the wire yourself, anyway.
It is not like CNN will tell you... let alone FOX

But going back to Bowling... In Canada real esciting news
are stories about speed bumps... not what you should be
afraid off TODAY.. QUICK hide women and children! The (insert
thing to be afraid of today) is wild out there! Oh and did we
tell you of this killer? What about ... (fill in the blanks)...
So going from what to be afraid off, to oh whether we should
have speed bumps on the corner of Fifth and Main, may be good
for the nation.

So if I am gong to get the minute of fear, versus the minute
of over priced maple syrup, and NO REAL NEWS... well give
me the overpriced maple syrup

17. Got it, a liability thing
Right, I mentioned McVeigh in that he allegedly was influenced to perform by hate radio.

That combined with military training and you got bad medicine.

21. Okay I was born in 1970, but here's something to consider:
Edited on Wed Jun-02-04 12:28 PM by rucky
The INTERNET has allowed us more opportunities for direct confrontation - giving us the illusion that our country is more split, when really the 'net just amplifies the voices of fanatics.

We have NOT really taken it to the streets like we did in the 1960's (or the 1860's for that matter). So I would say it seems worse now because there is more MASS media and more INTERPERSONAL media. more microphones.

something else to think about: If it weren't for DU, what would you be doing to express yourself?
